Rear wiper

Posted elsewhere but no answers so thout I would ask in the general section.

I've noticed that the rear wiper arm only lifts up by around 25mm (1") on my G31 which makes it impossible to change the blade or in fact clean the glass or blade easily. Yes you can lift the glass hatch and move the blade on it's arc to get to all the areas around the spindle but not when washing the car.

I've investigated and looks like there is a plastic tab under the nut cover that stops the arm being lifted, so you have to take the whole arm off to change the blade and you can't lift it when washing the car? Am I missing something here? searched for instructions but couldn't find anything.

Seems daft that you can't even raise it to clean wth glass properly, on both my previous F31's you could.

Anyone shed any light on it?

If the rear wiper is like the fronts, you need to put the wipers in "service mode".

We aren't lucky enough to have the touring here in the states (but it's coming!). I am guessing if you put the front in service mode, the rear will do it too.

Thanks Joe, don't think this is the case but will try later.

Hope you enjoy the touring when it arrives... and thats probably why I didn't get any responses to the question

Cheers Joe, thanks for the vote of confidence
I didn’t know but just went out to the garage to see if I could work it out….Brrr its bloody cold out there. Anyways after trying to put the rear wiper in service mode & making a mess with the screen wash & then having to clean it all of, it doesn’t appear to do service mode. So I had a look at the wiper arm & worked out that you have to lift the round mounting cover & then I reckon the arm has to be removed to change the blade, sounds a bit much but I reckon it’s a ten minute job.
As for cleaning I just lift the arm far enough to get an MF under it.

Trying to warm my hands up now

Yip I came to the same conclusion just thought I was missing something. Bloody stupid if you ask me not being able to lift it up you can't even clean the blade itself properly and we all know just how filthy the rear gets in this weather.

Anyway Chap thanks for having a look.

Oh the irony, I just ran out of work to get some Ice Melt (we use it here for walkways and pavement when it is this cold). I have my QX60 today and when I came out of the store, I noticed a chunk of ice stuck to the rear wiper. I began to pull it off, and off came the wiper housing and all with it! The arm is still on the car which will certainly scratch the window if I forget.

Besides the irony of this thread, if I actually tried to change this wiper, I am sure I would have been challenged to figure out how it came off. Threw it in my backseat and just ordered a replacement. I think it was the original anyway. The wildcard is if I busted off where it attaches to. It was too cold and too icy to inspect.

Aren’t there instruction in the paperback owners manual & the digital version built into iDrive (which has multiple search features) on how to replace the rear wiper blade?

Below are a few pics that shows how to access the owners manual built into iDrive7…where you can use the KEYWORD search feature. Simply type in WIPERS and you should get multiple selections about the front & rear wipers where at least one should be about how to replace the rear wiper blade.

You also have multiple ways to enter the text, you can speak, use the iDrive controller knob to select, or if you have the touchpad option, you can write the letters on the surface of the iDrive controller knob.

Ah, you got me……what was I thinking?

I tried a search for replacing the rear wiper blade on a g31 and came up with nothing…but I did run across instructions on how to remove the rear wiper arm and it shows the rear wiper raised away from the glass. See pic below with arrow pointing towards the lifted rear wiper blade.

Seems like Chaps was a real life owners manual here!

Good find, looks as though the spindle nut cover comes of allowing the arm to raise….I take back my previous post

Just for reference, my post asking about the instructions in the owners manual was directed toward the OP (Alscoob). I should have quoted him instead of simply asking the question.

Well it was just such an ‘out there’ post that I felt I just had to respond

Anyways, out of curiosity I had a look through my G31 owners manual (paper version) & there’s no mention of how to fold out the rear wiper, fronts yes but not the rear

I wonder if we’ve stumbled upon one of those times BMW left out any info on the topic in the manual?

I sense the sarcasm. Sadly, BMW manuals have become so bad and more of a one size fits all. I bet the G31 comes with a straight G30 manual.

I remember the days when I would read my manual cover to cover like a kid in a candy store BEFORE I took delivery. Now they are just base, generic and vanilla with no detail on options.

What can I say, well thank you for the effort and posts, I do appreciate it. Unfortunately the raised rear arm, as in the picture isn't possible. Even if you remove the nut cover still doesn't raise so looks like you have to remove it to do anything.

I'll investigate further over the weekend when I get time.
