Low Gas Mileage

Few facts:
1. I have a 2018 BMW 530Xi eDrive. I charge it every night fully and have a about 15 mile commute one way to work.
2. I drive it on the Eco Pro Mode.

Issues:
1. When the battery runs out, MPG is very bad .. almost 10 or below. I see the slider staying below 10 MPG irrespective of what speed I'm going at when my foot is on gas pedal. I feel that the RPMs are high as well.
2. Car's got about 9K miles on it...and I feel that the battery is starting to drain out faster now!

Anyone notice these issues on their 2018 Hybrid BMW 530?

when I run out of juice, I usually switch over to Battery Control mode. I get about 15 mpg and I am very easy on the gas pedal. I have no idea how it's rated at 29mpg (fuel only).

I'm pleased...

Just took a 650 mile drive and got 29MPG with no stops for charging just for gas. Auto E-Drive, Comfort mode all the way.

This is the exact reason why I prefer diesel over phev. This is even worst when you drive for long period of time. BMW should offer phev based on diesel cars.

have any other manufacturers combined diesel and electric? Seems like it would be the best MPG ratings for long drives.

But is diesel the best ICE for such intermittent use. I used to think diesel would be the best engine, have changed my mind, seeing how diesel's get messed up with lots of cold starts, short journey and winter use. DPF regenerations messed up, carbon and gunk build up, not a good recipe for longevity. I even have concerns for petrol ICE use, where they are used so intermittently in the PHEV applications.

Diesel is most suited for long journeys, where we get plenty of heat soak and steady speed driving.

I completely agree...mpg on gas only is even worse than a regular (non-hybrid) car!

I dont have the xDrive, but my MPG is nowhere near that bad. I've very rarely used gas, but when I do, it says that I'm getting around 23-25 in the city. The only highway trip I've taken so far without any charge got me about 30 mpg.

I charge daily when I'm at home. Before I was charging daily, I got about 24 mpg in the city and about 33 mpg on the highway. With daily charging I get about 150 mpg.

Yeh diesel not like as regards it's emissions here in Europe so from that point of view a diesel hybrid probably isn't going to go down well. Can't think of any manufacturer that has gone down that route.

That mpg figure when on gas doesn't sound that good thought you would get more than that for a 2 litre petrol engine. What sort of driving , stop start or motorway or something in between?

For motorway I am getting more than that in my 540i!

for those that are getting 25+mpg after your battery has depleted, have you ever reset your instrument cluster right afterwards? Just to see what your "fuel only" MPG reads? This is when my car reads 15 mpg. If I don't reset mine, it can easily reading 35+mpg... but that's not an accurate read for fuel only consumption because its an average consumption combined with electric miles.

The 530e weighs 400 pounds more than its gasoline counterpart the 530i.

I would think from the weight alone (And add more if you have X drive) the gas engine consumption and mileage would be impacted substantially more vs the standard gasoline/petrol model.

This is one of the reasons why I am not 100% sold on hybrids. Something is got to give up somewhere.

I agree that 400+ pounds will have an impact on gas mileage. However, my concern is that the fuel only MPG is rated twice as much than it actual is... 15mpg vs 29mpg is a huge difference.

Are you really replicating the conditions of the rating? Is this actual mpg, or simply an OBC reading? Is your battery getting charged during the high fuel use?

What mpg does the car return on a highway cruise with a depleted battery? That is more a gauge of whether there is something wrong, than in urban driving, which is so personal to you and your driving conditions.

No, I am not replicating the conditions of the rating... I wouldn't know the conditions of how BMW conducted their testing. This is a simple instrument cluster reading so its nothing scientific. I do a reset after the battery reads "---" and I travel for 15 miles with 75% of it going 50+mph before reaching home.
