Because it's a better design?

The F10's hood offered little sun glare protection. And it doesn't matter, as the anti-glare coating on the screen really does work. So totally not an issue. I've driven a 6 series convertible, which has the exposed screen, in sunlight with the top down and had zero legibility issues with the screen. And that's an older version.

But all in all, it's a much better design for the dash. It allows the screen to be higher without having the whole dashboard high. Allows the designers much more freedom. I seem to be in the minority on this board, but most design experts agree that this is a better solution.

Now if you look at the c-class's stuck on abomination, that's an example of how NOT to do it.

Don't like the disconnection between the center and the dashboard, shame the 5 is ending like the 7 series! I always thought the best dashboard out is the current 6 series and the long continues line from center to the passenger side.

The interior of the 6er is easily the best interior in any BMW today and would say is the better interior of its competitors (A7, CLS). From materials, design and most importantly the layout. Absolutely love how it's angled towards the driver like BMW's of old and the waterfall splitting the driver from passenger emphasizing a driver-orientated cockpit.

I mean it's kind of upsetting that they aren't doing anything huge in terms of changes. The 2017 Mercedes is a beast interior wise and BMW is just doing the same thing over and over.

We all know it's going to look like a mini 7. They don't stray too much.

Seems like strictly evolutionary changes to the F10 both exterior and interior. The interior (instrument panel, displays, dashboard, etc.) is way behind where Mercedes and Audi are going. I'm surprised that BMW didn't make more radical changes...

I hope that they don't make the car larger.

No avoidance when down to the 5 growing in size, after all today 3 series is larger than the e39 5 series, so maybe after this model a 3 series will be the new 5 for us with BMW for a while, just like the 2 series is shaping up to replace the 3 series in character and size, and worst for us all manufactures are at it.

Renderings

With cladding removed, we can do some pretty close renderings based on the 7 series (as both cars are very similar, and are another evolutionary work from Karim Habib's Team - that unfortunate IMO as there won't be differentiation between the cars). Here's some preliminary work...

Before and after... I'll try to refine (note that the lower part is not there yet) and complete the work in a few days... But you guys can start having a pretty good idea on how the car will look like...

Nice work man..it looks like a bigger 3-series..and although I like how the 3 looks, i really hope to be able to easily distinguish one from the other, unlike what's going on with merc and Audi.

I completely agree with the posts above about the interior. The waterfall design looks waay better than this. For me the 7-series was a disappointment in many ways, but the interior layout takes the cake, and we'll have just that in here again.

Reminds me of when Jimmy Kimmel shows people on the street an existing iPhone and calls it the next gen iPhone and everyone says they like it so much better - wouldn't it be funny if this was the current 5-series with camo on it and we were all saying, "that's way nicer".

Yea the C-class display looks like crap, but take a look at the S-class, now that's what I think BMW should have done.

I like/drive BMW but this does not look anything special. This is the new 5 series??? nothing much really changed, it looks about the same. In my opinion, that stand alone navigation/idrive unit looks like they ran out of material to incorporate it in one with the dashboard. They made it look like the 3 series which is a downgrade.

The 2017 E class on the other hand it's a complete overhaul and i think the design on the inside looks amazing. Mercedes made it look classier like the S class rather downgrade it like BMW is doing. Oh and the new E class can also do all those 'intelligent' self parking things that the BMW keeps bragging out in their commercials for the 7 series.
oh well i'm glad i'm not in the market for a 5 series.

I don't think anyone is expecting BMW to deviate much from the F10 and G11 in terms of design. As for tech and features, no one knows exactly what the G30 is going to feature so it might be a bit premature to compare it to the E-Class and what the G30 may or may not have.

New E even better...loses the row of buttons between the two displays. And has better COMAND setup. I am worried compared to this, that the 5, like the 7, will be a little plain. And yes, I have seen the 7 in person, on multiple occasions. It doesn't blow me away. I hope the designers added a little more flair to the 5 under those camo blankets.

Why shouldn't we expect a big change though, it is a new model. The F10 series is in its 6th year. Other 5 series generations (e28, e34, e39, e60) have all been in production for 6 years before the model change. So to me it just seem like laziness and lack of innovation. Regarding the technical features, yes u are right it's too early to say anything but I'm skeptical.

That's just how BMW handles their design. I don't necessarily agree nor disagree with it, as long as it's not hideous I'm ok if it's an evolutionary design rather than revolutionary (it's not like the F10 was an ugly design). But even if you go back to the history of the 5er, they don't really change between generations so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that BMW is going for subtle changes.

^ The E60 5 series is the best looking 5 series ever and by the looks of it, that's not about to change anytime soon. Everything else looks and sounds plebeian, mundane and sleep inducing. It comes as no surprise that the E60 also had the most youthful and exciting M5 variant.

Maybe after 30 years when I'm 50 like the target customer for the G30, I'll start finding it appealing.

I would have to say naw about your E60 beliefs I have owned a E39 E60 and F10 and I have to say by far the E39 M5 even though it was slower was a better built machine then the E60. The V10 was amazing but only if you had bought it 08-10. When it comes to looks the E39 I feel looked more subtle then the E60 and the F10 is a better when it comes to looks but I like how BMW went back to boxy style. But this is my opinion everybody like what they like....
