The profile of the car looks good, and weight savings if true or only partially true is a great thing

It is against the LAW in Germany to let your engine idle to warm up. Even at traffic lights it is not allowed. There are signs at long traffic lights for drivers to switch off their engines. This was also part of the reason why new cars have start/stop systems. It also saves gas - in a country where we pay ~$8 per gallon for fuel.

The i3 does not have stop/start. But I got what you were saying.

The new mirrors on this and 7-series looks ugly. I donīt understand why BMW put the turn signals in the middle of that mirror. The current mirror with turn signals down with the black plastic piece looks much better. And the curve on the current mirror looks much better.

I thought it was coming out in late 2015 when the 2016 models are out (2016 BMW 5 series), but maybe it comes out in late 2016 when 2017 models are released?

2017 model. It will hit dealerships around August of 2016. Probably orderable a bit earlier than that. One of the real deep geeks around here could tell us the SOP (Start Of Production) date when we get a little closer.

The new 5er will be unveiled during 2016 and is the highLight to BMWs centenary.

So the F10 only has a 6 year run then- unusual as traditionally it has always been a 7 year run for BMW models.

And just so we are clear...........

F10 went on sale June of 2010 as a 2011 model so you have 2011,2012,2013,2014,2015, 2016- and then 2017 will be the G30.

That is 6 years.

Why the shorter model life Scott?

Anyone who likes BMW sedans has to like the profile, so familiar. Should be a lovely car.

Will this car be offered with manual transmission. If not, I'd never consider buying it.

If it does not, which full size luxury sport sedan will buy instead, that offers a manual?

Wonder if there will be an increase in wheelbase. A little more interior space would be nice.

Scott is playing a little game here. This "unveiled during 2016" doesn't actually tell you if it will go on sale in 2016. And there's a reason why he couldn't just say that.

The reason is this. F10 ends production in October 2016. G30 starts production in November 2016. Minimum factory-to-showroom time in Europe is a couple of weeks, U.S. has to wait 6 weeks or more. There could also be a hold on sales until a predetermined start date for better marketing. Bottom line: G30 is not coming in August-September as you would normally expect. It's more like January-February 2017, and by then they might as well call it MY2018.

I give this timing prediction about 90% probability of being true (with MY2018 at about 40%). Don't expect higher quality predictions until about a year from now, when the first production-level examples roll out.

IMHO BMW needs shave some material off of the nose, the over hang is a bit excessive. Would be nice to compare the side profile/length of the existing F10 with the Spy shots of the G30.

Looks good. Are flared fenders staying, improving (more flares), or no more?
Anybody knows?

With the new e-class coming, the interior better be good or they will lose a lot of sales.. The new e will be taking a lot of the design cues from the S class.

If the 5 series is not big enough then get the 7 series. What I can't understand is why the cars need to keep getting bigger. I had a 540 m sport and nobody ever complained about the size. Now the 5 series is a large as the older 7 series and the 3 series is as large as the e39. Do we really need that much space?

The 5er arrived on the European market in March 2010. US sales did not commence until June. The actual launch was in November 2009.
Remember I nor do anybody else at Munich use the US market one year ahead in market launch strategies. The car will be unveiled in 2016.
