Finally: Almost a G30 owner

Greetings from Ireland. I'm almost done on a deal for a new to me 2017 540ix in moonstone blue. Im coming from a smaller 2017 m140i, so I'm familiar with the powertrain just moving into a bigger, more comfortable chassis with some xdrive traction. My m140 i is a little rocket, MHD, stage 2, LSD upgrade etc, but time to move on to something more family friendly, but still have some upgrade potential to keep my inner car guy tinkering away.

I got the spec of the seller, i think its pretty decent from what i can see

Congrats. Looking over the VIN decode, I'd say it is not "loaded " with B&W being the only significant option (but a good one). I don't see any driver assist options and it looks like the interior is sensatec, which is a nice synthetic but not a high end option. Looks like a pretty standard build with the exception of B&W. But these do come nicely equipped.

Joe for ireland that's a loaded car.

Our wonderful country charges double tax on options so most cars are completely minimal spec.

That tax is charged even more on a patrol 540 as it considered a polluting car.

Welcome to the EU!!

Wow! I did not know this. That just doesn't seem fair or right. I understand luxury tax, but some options are for increased safety and they tax that?!?! Damn.

Yeah it's madness the options are taxed based on the co2 emissions of the base car so an option on an M5 can cost almost twice the cost of the same option in a 530e.

They even tax additional safety options.

Hence Irish cars are not as high spec as our neighbours in the UK.

We use to have lots of imports then Brexit happened.

Crazy we get taxed VAT(like US sales tax) and another illegal EU tax called VRT which the government pay a fine against annually but the EU fine is lower then the tax take annually so they continue to screw the consumer!!!

So even when someone is buying CPO or second hand? That would be double dipping on tax?

I guess they double dip here in the states too on sales tax.

No it's only at initial purchase but it means cars are crazy money here and at resale VAT is charged again.

To put it in perspective a fully loaded 530e is 85k Euro that's just short of $100k.

An M5 fully loaded is about $200k.

Hi Joe, as CnSky said, the cost of motoring in Ireland compared to the US equivalents is pretty bad, and a lot of the options on a US model probably weren't even available to choose over here, different markets get different options available.

For example my outgoing m140i has the same b58 but in a little 1 series chassis, you can't get them in the US. 540i was also only sold in xdrive here i believe with no option for RWD

But coming from an 1 series to this 5 i think it will do me ok!

Yeah I noticed that he tends to mainly do 530e.

You could always get it remapped up to 360bhp I'm having it done next week only 300 Euro at BMWorkshop. That's higher than a stock 540i and they save the original map so you can reverse it if required.

Best option could be a very high spec 530e, super low tax of 170 PA and plenty of horses with a remap.

Only give is you don't have Xdrive.

Easy to map a 540 too, i've already taken the sports cat off my m140i which should bolt onto the 540 should see over 400 remapped with that

You do have me thinking now though, they have some nice newer 330e options aswell

Graham is a gent you should just pop in anyway and see his stock. He can also source cars from UK.

The difference in interior in a fully spec G30 is huge, its more like a seven series inside of I'm honest think you should look into it.

See below just took these a minute ago to show you an example.

I changed alloys, installed mid guards and had the car decchromed but apart from that she is standard spec as purchased from GT Motors.

Very rare alloys in Ireland.

They are BMW 1001i alloys only installed on M Sport special editions last year. Uber rare!!

I purchased them from Germany removed from a new car. Someone must have not liked them.🤦

Definitely especially with Nappa leather.

My advice before you buy is go see Graham to get an idea of what the options look like in the flesh.

Even if you don't purchase from him it's a very worthwhile visit before putting 45k down.

I had a chat with the lads in GT Motors yesterday but they didnt have anything that caught my eye or would be able to get anything in anytime soon that would have match the budget for my next car.

I test drove the 540i today and was pretty happy with it, i couldnt fault it really, it drive well, body work was in excellent condition, a couple of minor stone chips etc . They are very quiet in the cabin compared to my outgoing m140i, i would need to do something with the exhaust to get a bit more volume there . I should have it on the driveway by next weekend. Time to start getting the shopping list together!
