You realize the current 535xi already typically MSRP's in the $65-70k range, right? And the current 528xi usually is right at $60k or just under? What were you expecting the new one to MSRP for? It's not like the competition is any cheaper.

Wow, a lot of whining.
Itīs a bit premature yet eh, letīs judge it when we can see and drive it.
I thought we all knew the G30 wasnīt a revolution from the F10.
Looking at the 7ī, the 5 should be a careful approach from the well aging F10.

I've got my eyes on the Porsche Macan as well

I mean I love BMW's, but the build quality of Porsche is way more better than any BMW's...

A close friend of mine owns a 1st gen panamera with 120.000 miles on the clock, and there isn't a single crackling noise or any loose trims inside the cabin. It's as good as day 1.

Macan ? Not me even if I had the cash
IMHO glad there will be lots of options and leather not std.
We all have a budget and mine allowed me to stretch to a F11 530d Msport with 19" 351 rims otherwise boggo vs a 520d full of expensive and arguably pointless toys.
I know which is more fun in my book ?

Same here
I am fighting to stop myself from going to Porsche dealership today and ordering a Macan GTS before I even see the new 5er. That car is so much fun to drive, and 50% of the fun is coming from the exhaust. On the other hand BMW is obviously again not offering sports exhaust as an option on 540i, while M550 is arriving later
The only huge downside of Macan is that it does not have a HUD, if Porsche would offer this, I would take it for sure immediately (they don't have it even in the new Panamera, incredible).
Honestly, with being able to view the Nav screen on the right side gauge. HUD is not important in the Macan. The cluster is so well positioned as a drivers car. It's just as fun to drive as the Model X

With G30 it gets even trickier.
You have to with L6 engine (540i, 535d/540d) or V8 if you want a proper 5er, otherwise with L4 engines you end up with the series 3 front suspension

Don't put Tesla in a same sentence as Porsche please
I love HUD a lot, I don't ever need to take my eyes of the road, a car does not even have to have instrument gauges with HUD

One very interesting thing... for those of us who buy xdrive BMWs both the 530 and 540 list 704 suspension as part of the xdrive Msport package. unless that is a typo looks like a sign bmw is moving away from handicapping xdrive cars with base suspension on Msport models.

I think I read something about xDrive with sportsuspension when the camouflaged g30 was test driven by the press couple of weeks ago.

Can't wait for the G30, and it'll be horribly expensive but exquisite.

Interesting things here. Nice that you can spec M Sport Brakes and that to get Remote Control Parking you need to step up to the 540i.

I think they are going to push the xDrive abit more this time round to combat the Quattros. Would be nice for them to set up the xDrive just like the regular G30.

Of particular note is that the G30 will semi-autonomous system via the Driver Assistance Plus II package (with Active Cruise Control with stop and go functionality, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant and Active Lane Change).

Maybe this "package" is what America needs/wants but here in the UK, I don't need that, don't want it. Give me something that benefits my driving and doesn't do it for me!!!!makes me feel the joy, makes me want to buy the frickin car ffs!!!!

Useless toys are.......well........a waste of good design talent!!!!! Christ, if the car became a submarine if I ran off the end of a pier because I was being chased by some bad asses in a helicopter, now, that's a toy I would tick the box for.....

Had a bad week, this was the last straw........just when I needed a submarine......

There were no AMG E43 and Macan S/GTS when 535xi came out in 2011. E350 was seen as a stale model from MB and A6 was a niche seller from Audi. BMW F10 didn't even need to be great, to win against those sleepy competitors. It's 2016, things have changed. Now there are real competitors out like Jaguar XE, E43, Volvo S90, new A6, Macan S/GTS that will take a sizeable bite out of 5 series, which, judging by the 7 series tepid market response, isn't going to be anything special either. Hopefully competition will force all players to make better product at competitive prices.

^This.

G30 isn't even out yet, but if the 7 series vs. S550 reviews and sales are of any indication, new 5 series is going to be facing strong head winds.

So does this mean BMW is departing from the normal 7-year chassis lifecycle?
F10 started in 2011, which means G30 should start in 2018---but according to this, it'll be MY2017.

No, it started early 2010 and the reveal was in 2009.

1) I am going to ignore the fact that you keep bringing up the Macan. It's a tiny SUV, and outside of a handful of people posting in this thread, no one is cross shopping a tiny SUV with a large sedan.

2) The E43 is expected to start around $65k and likely cost $80k with typical options, so it's going to be priced more like the M550 than the 535 (and performance-wise likely won't be much of a step up from the upcoming 540, if at all). And the M550, which will again likely cost a smidge more but be close, will demolish it.

If you want a Macan, get a Macan. If you want an E, get an E. Personally I'll wait until I've actually seen and driven the new 5er and we know the prices before I condemn it, since doing so beforehand is fairly useless and stupid.

No, the F10 SEDAN was first released as a 2011 model in the US. How do I know? Because I have one (the earlier build ones from April 2010). Unless you are saying there was no such thing as a 2010 E60 535i?

Now if you are referring to the 535i GT, that presumably started in MY 2010...but I am referring to BMW sedans (not including the 1-year-off convertibles, Mx models, etc.), which have historically had a 7-year US life cycle. e.g. E39 (1997-2003), E60 (2004-2010), so on...
