BMW M550 Rear End

Do you guys think this car is totaled? It was rear ended on a long island parkway. Airbags went off, 3 tires flat.

Hope you are ok and the car did its job. Does the front door(s) shut without large gaps? Usually that is a sign of frame damage. If it doesn't have any frame damage I would guess it would be fixable.

The rear doors close but the trunk as misaligned , rear crash bar out of place. The frame looks bent not sure

Yikes! Seem like a lot of intrusion, I would push for total if shop has work on the frame. The can't get it perfect

Glad you are ok

Looking at that rear door, the shut lines look inconsistent to me.

Agree . I think all of us here feel the same about our cars, no matter how god a repair can be, it will never be the same again and if I were in your position, I'd like it written off as well.

Main thing is that you are ok, the structure did its work and protected you. Surprised the front airbags went off though for a rear prang though. Do you have comfort seats by any chance and if so , did the active head restraints fire as well?

Hope the insurers conclude matters quickly for you

Yes the other parties insurance is taking full responsibility. They are coming to view the car this week Thursday, so I'll find out. Only the side airbag curtains activated, although I do have comfort seats .it was a really hard hit

Sorry, your car is totaled. Especially with air bag deployment and 3 tires, I’ll bet there is hidden damage.

If that were my car I wouldn't want it after it was repaired. That's a big hit,and the car will be worth substantially less after being repaired, and you'll get killed come time to sell or trade-in. Hope they total it and you cut your losses, glad you're ok.

Progressive totaled my X6 instantly for far less damage. You don't want it repaired. It will never be the same and the resale value will be terrible.

Oh man.. so sorry to see this post. That's the kind of thing that makes my blood run cold. I have had so many near misses with distracted people zooming up in the rearview and locking their brakes. I hope they write it off for you and give you a proper payout that allows you to replace the car with an equivalent. Apart from the visual crumple zones and airbags doing their stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a plethora of other interior damage (including seats, fasteners etc.).

Mandatory AEB can't come soon enough IMHO..

Most importantly everyone walked away and no major injuries. Personally I would want this car totaled by the insurance company. Start fresh with a new car...

The worst damage is always what you can't see. Think suspension, battery electrics in the rear of a BMW, wheels and tyres, fuel tank and lines. Then add up the number of body panels that need replacing. BMW don't do door skins just whole doors. Then add labour. I'll eat my hat if that isn't written off. Hope you have GAP insurance for the difference between value now and a new one. Glad everyone walked away but don't sign off on whiplash etc until a few weeks have passed without incident. You did go to the doctor didn't you.?

Did the head restraints ( as you have comfort seats) not fire then? ( should be pushed for a couple of inches) those should have mitigated against whiplash

I was told by my BMW dealership don't accept anything from the insurance company other than a 'totaled' car because of the airbags being deployed...my 4 series suffered similar damage (visually) - my front end was destroyed, my airbags deployed, which automatically = totaled car...

First, I'm glad the OP is basically OK (aches and pains will continue to show up for a while) and was able to survive.

None of us can tell from those pictures if it's a total loss. It's pointless to guess, also because different states have different thresholds, and we don't know how old the car is, the miles, etc. to determine ACV. The same damage on a 550 may not be a total whereas a 530 would be. Because the 550 is worth more.

This is one of the reasons I leased my G30. The lease has gap insurance, and if it gets wrecked but not totalled, I don't have to worry about diminished value.

Couple of things:

1 - When dealing with the other driver's insurance company, try not to sign anything that takes away your right to medical claims in the future.

2 - I hope your car is totaled.

3 - This is purely selfish on my part. If you get #2, and if you get the chance, could you have someone take the front bumper off and tell all of us M550i owners whether the fog light wiring harnesses are there (installed at the factory, so to speak)? This would provide folks with a huge piece of information about how hard it will be to add fog lights to an M550i.

4 - Really hope your car is totaled

Bumper removal doc:

This is a video about removing the bumper (wish I spoke German because I'll bet they're talking about the fog light wiring around the 7 minute mark):

Had the same thing happen to me. Girl in a Dodge Durango hit my back end the same side while I was stopped on the highway during rush hour. Same side and damage. It was repaired at a cost of around $15,000. Body shop said as long as the rails (frame) was not bent it would not be totaled. Looked bad, but no bent frame. Body shop did a great job and it was good as new when I got it back.

Bad part was I had to drive a Toyota Prius for 30 days.
