Not really. That much power is worthless without AWD.
totally correct and that is why BMW has also made the M5 in AWD. once you get to about 450hp and equivalent Tq without AWD you just get the electronic nannies dialing back power.
The only way to prevent it is more tire which you can do in sports cars but in luxury sport sedans tire noise would be an issue with fatter tires.

Everyone was prainsing the F1 lineup, and questioning the G30 for it looks.
I think that debate is closed, as the G3* looks like a winner from every angle, also for it's performance and handling.

Can you tell us more about the M Sport Suspension Professional on this model? Is it expected to have more M like handling than the sportiest 540i configuration?

Also can IAS be configured with the sportiest suspension option on the M550

So many things coming out I want! Hellcat Jeep, E63 AMG, M5 ahhh.

How is e63 vs m5 reliability. I know m5 doesn't have a great record for reliability, isn't benz generally more reliable in their performance category?

This is exactly what I want to understand.

I'd love to get back into the brand, but BMW's execution of xDrive has been all about foul weather traction and has ruined any vestige of performance orientation. Audi has calibrated it's Quattro system for performance first (especially the trick sport diff in its S models) with foul weather traction as an added benefit.

BMW's press release states that the M550i xDrive "splits drive power between all four wheels as the situation demands". Does this mean that power is split front and rear as well as side-to-side? If so, is the side-to-side torque split via the diff (like Audi) or via braking? Those are the things that make AWD enhance a car's performance. If BMW has done that with the M550, I'll be out of my S6 and back in a BMW.

Fair point mate. I am afraid if BMW really did a proper torque vectoring technology in this model, they would do more song and dance about it..

Well currently in the US:

550i xdrive = $68,600 starting (445 horsepower, just doesn't have all the M badges)
M5 = $94,100

So $25,500 difference!

I am guessing the M550i will start around $70K still since the Audi S6 starts at $70,900 (2017 model, 450 horsepower with AWD), BMW is aiming for the S6 I think after it embarrassed the last generation 550i
But with options the M550i xdrive will be pretty much the same price as a M3 fully loaded, and it looks like their 0-60 times will be about the same. M550i = more practicle just as fast in everyday driving (in fact in lots of conditions it will be faster due to AWD), but won't be as fun to drive and won't be as fast on a track.
BMW is giving me lots of options when I trade in my M3 in 2-3 years, for $75K you will be able to get a M3/M4, X3M/X4M, or M550i xdrive, some may hate that the later are even being made but I love it.
$25,000 is a big enough difference for many to opt for 550 then. Still surprised the difference in Europe is so little though. Then again -- at least in holland -- it's more like double that anyway

As it shouldn't be. The rumor of an "on demand" AWD system should suite the M5 perfectly.

Can you point me to issues with the N63TU? I've been trying to follow the F10 and X5 boards to watch for issues in the TU, and I really haven't seen much. Most everyone with issues tend to be on N63.

I'm not saying you're wrong...maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places.

Sounds like the G30's V8 is going to be a new V8 over what's currently available, but I'm not seeing any evidence that it's anything drastically new, and possibly just an evolution of the N63 series.

I have a genuine question here.

Let's say there are people out there who can afford true M cars, but don't want to get the true M cars due to the stiff suspension and "always on sporty" drive. They are happy to dish out for a dynamic car that will have a luxurious/comfortable ride by default, but will have the on demand M sportiness for the random weekends they want to have fun.

Is the "M performance" brand/section not good for them?

M sport package is fine. Fun. Whatever. But BMW shouldn't put an M on the trunk in front of anything other than a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. You know there's a whole thread w Civics and shit w M badges. This badge looks like one of those. Granted, I'd love to have this 550. I'm sure it's sick. But an M on the back should be preserved for the king at the top of the model range, and here that belongs to the M5. Put M550 on the floor mats.

most of the problems you are correct is with the N63. The N63tu is a couple of years newer so have not had as much time to develop the problems but I have read and also been told by some techs that they have already done a few engine swaps of the n63tu.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=900367

here is one guy that had problems and I think someone else in that thread had a problem with his n63tu.
I think c&d also mentioned that the bmw v8 engines has been having some problems.
n63tu still had oil consumption that was not fixed.

The following statement is encouraging, but I have no idea whether Motor Trend knows what they're talking about. This is what they say:
Additionally, the M550i xDrive, as the name implies, comes standard with BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system that uses torque vectoring to determine exactly where power is sent—and can send it independently to any wheel it chooses.

I see where you're coming from. But as I posted on another thread a moment ago:

"I'm really liking the "M Performance" division. There are many buyers that can afford M cars, but do not wish to get one because it's not the best daily. The "M Performance" I think is a great middle ground where this group of owners can get the M power and sportiness, but still maintain a comfortable ride for a daily.

I know a lot of M fans are complaining about the dilution of the M brand, but I don't see this a dilution at all. I see this as bringing the best of the M division to car owners who want and can afford M cars, but don't want the stiffness and always on sport mode of the M cars. It doesn't meant that it's cheapening the M brand in anyway. It's a win win for everyone here."

Basically, the use of the M badge doesn't dilute or cheapen the M brand IMO. I think it gives car enthusiasts a lot more personality by having a true "M5" and the M550i.
