G30 520D SE ordered - one question!

I'm coming back to BMW after a few years with Merc/Audi/Jag and Lexus. I have ordered a 520D SE with the following extra spec:

Alpine White/Cognac interior with brushed aluminium trim
Standard 10 spoke 17'' rims with non-runflat tyres (don't look great but best for ride round these parts)
Heated steering wheel
Reverse camera
LED foglights front
High-beam assist
Active cruise control with stop and go
Harman Kardon
5 year service pack

As standard it has the Professional Nav/Ambient lighting/Heated seats front/DAB

Total cost is €53,472 including delivery etc and a €4,000 BMW discount. I'm not willing to spend any more money but am toying with the idea of dropping the front fogs, the reverse camera and the heated steering wheel and getting metallic paint (maybe Bluestone or Sophisto) instead. I'd rather hold on to those bits of equipment but am a bit worried that an Alpine White SE with small wheels will look like crap. Any opinions???
Cheers.

yr choice of course. rear camera is useful. personally would drop heated steering wheel dont see the point.
if you dont like the wheels , go for somethong bigger but as you say that will impact the ride to some extent.

stop and go is bri?liant so keep that!
just my thoughts but yr choice at end of day.
depends upon budget and dealer discount (always push!)

Thanks for your reply. Dropping the heated steering wheel wouldn't make much difference as it only costs €250. The metallic cost €1,000. So to get the metallic I would have to drop all three options. What do you reckon of Alpine White as a colour for a 5 Series? None of the other colours are particularly exciting either imo.

The value of the heated steering wheel really depends on where you live. I'm sorry to say that I'm fairly ignorant of Ireland's weather patterns, but I can tell you where I live (snowy Chicago) that a heated steering wheel is a MUST. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but I've had a heated wheel now since 2008 and I wouldn't consider another car without it. I guess I also wouldn't do something without a HUD... so maybe spoiled.

But heated wheels are great!

Brushed aluminium trim, if you have kids a real pain to look after have it on my F10 as well as my wife X3, since family journeys are always with the X3 we made sure when ordering new car to replace the X3 the brushed aluminium trim was out.
Also the 17 inch alloys will look on the small side specially with the white color on order if I was you consider the 18 because you find the wheels have a major impact on the way the car will look to you each time you walk to it.
Make sure you go for enhanced Bluetooth option, BMW is complex with different setups and what can you do, so investigate connections options properly.
With a white car and if you do have kids add the tinted sun protection back windows, it will look great with the white car and works well for kids specially with the winter suns we getting lately.
I drop the heated steering, our climate just like in England is not a must.
The fog lights are standard well was the case with the E60 and F10.

The kids aren't a problem any more! I'd prefer 18'' wheels but I'm not sure it's worth paying €1,500 for them. The fogs are not standard any more I'm afraid. I will check out the dark glass though.

I have the heated wheel (Ireland too) and love it.
I wouldn't worry over alpine it looks good on the g30 and you can always get a set of 18 inch wheels down the line if you want to help the looks!

Have you considered purchasing your car in the UK ?
I ordered mine from Park Lane in London, almost 25% cheaper than the price here on the continent.
You could afford metal paint, bigger wheels with variable dampers for extra confort and maybe more for the same price ...

That's what I was thinking. Wear out the 17'' tyres and then get 18'' tyres and rims if I think I need them. Had the heated steering wheel a couple of years ago and thought it was really nice - pure luxury!

If not wrong this will the expensive way of doing it, i.e, the factory upgrades are always the cheaper option! providing you going for OEM ones.

It's €1,500 to go up one inch to 18s. Not sure it's worth it. Plus that would mean you'd get runflats whereas the 17s are non runflat.

I would if I managed to sell my own car privately. But otherwise I'm stuck with trading it in locally.

With the white colour for outside the Exterior trim, High-gloss Shadowline works better in my opinion, and is standard as well as the Matt Alu, hence make sure you double check your order with the dealer and your chosen option, I got screwed couple of times with specifications.
Must admit not only the options are now more expensive in comparison to ordering my F10 5 years ago, but find the list is larger all be it they auto gear box is a must, looking at the G30 less flexibility and at the higher price, shocking the fog light are an option for 50 plus k car.

What about M-sport? Then you get 18" and fogs, and to me, a much nicer car.

Just remember that if you want to add 18" wheels later on the SE, wheels from other BMW won't fit anymore (apart from the new 7-series). So it might not be that easy to find cheap wheels for the G30.

M-Sport would be nice but it's €5,000 more than the SE. I could get it if I drop all the extras that I want - HK, active cruise, camera etc.

Christ £46,000 for a 520d, I know Ireland is expensive for cars having worked there for a couple of years, but I couldn't spend that kind of money on 520d, the UK you'd get a 540i xdrive M sport for that.

I need to top moaning about the cost of living in the UK!

Very true. The only thing is that your trade-in is also worth a lot more here than it would be in the UK. So the cost to change would be probably the same.

At those prices I'd never get off the Luas!

% wise perhaps but it's the same % on a bigger cost against a larger retail so all things being equal they cost quite a bit more, but you knew that anyway.

Cost to change similar? Better trade in values in Ireland? I think not... I have a fully loaded 2015 530d MSport ...was offered €55k against a 640d GC last June, best offer I currently have against a new G30 is €38k, that's a chunk of value down the drain in six months. Think Brexit, the sterling rate and cheap imports are conspiring against me, I suspect BMW sales in Ireland will be down in 2017 as I know of other F10 owners getting ridiculously low values for their cars to change up.

I hear what you're saying. It used to be about €10k to go up the year like for like on a €50k car. But I suppose the fall of sterling and people importing used cars from the UK has hit the second hand value of Irish cars hard. The €38k you mention is to go from a 2015 to a 2017 and from an old model to a new model, but it's still a helluva lot.

Same with my 520d M sport, we decided to order new X5 to replace my wife X3 as it is the family car, for my F10 I am thinking of keeping the car for every day use and buy a 2nd garage queen like a good 991 996 currently at good prices and probably not for long. trading my F10 for new G30 is simply not adding up plus not a big fan of the G30 looks specially the soft M sport look, certainly not the feeling I got when moving to E60 and later on the F10. On top of the Brexit and 2nd hand market BMW sold a record 2 million plus F10, I see more F10's on the road than Passats.

I was at the launch of the g30 in my local dealer and they told me they would be offering low value trade ins to people ordering even existing 5 series owners due to current market conditions. They reckon they don't want to be stuck with a lad of overpriced used cars.
A friend of mine bought a pre reg 520d se during the summer for 10 grand below list from a BMW dealer. This is part of the reason the values of older cars are so low. In a year to 18 months the g30 will be similar as they are already giving 4K off before any additional dealer discount.

Re the op's dilemma, have you thought of a black car ?
Always looks ok with the chrome on the se model against it and is an easier resell than a white car according to my dealer. He recommends if you don't want to pay for paint black looks good and they prefer it when coming back.when I bought my first f10 I got black and used the money to go to the 18" wheels which improved the appearance no end to me. I'm not sure what the wheels are going to look like on the g30 however so 17" might be ok
Don't delete the fogs as the new led ones look very well .
