Well that was quick
I ordered my 540i Xdrive M Sport on Friday, received the order number today and car is at 1200 already, with week 38 build and week 41 delivery. Before ordering I was told to expect November/December delivery - week 41 is early october!!
Also, when I was told the car was almost at the point of locking down the spec, I changed the interior trim to piano black and was told that as it was an individual trim, it could delay delivery by 4-6 weeks which I said I would accept. However after amending the order, the dealer said the date on the system has not moved but the change has been accepted. Not impossible if they have piano in stock I guess (its not an uncommon selection). It all sounds a bit too good to be true and I am waiting for a call to tell me there was a mistake - seems incredibly fast if not. |

Its funny, you can tell a lot about a person from their build - I clearly favour power and entertainment tech over comfort, advanced safety, autonomous features and higher level materials.
But I am extremely happy to have been able to choose exactly what I want and not have to compromise on a pre-made spec which I always have done previously having never bought new. I was originally looking to buy pre-reg but got such a good discount it was actually cheaper than the pre-reg ones, none of which were exactly as I would have ordered them. |

very nice spec.
joining what I suspect will be a fairly exclusive club in the UK, guessing that less than 10% of 5's in the UK will be 540s. It's such a lovely smooth and refined car. |

I enjoy my 535d and had there been a 540d, I would not have looked at the petrol, but there isn't so I did and discovered its a great engine. I have not had petrol since the days of the e46 when I had a number of 330ci's and M3's. I am excited for the change TBH. |

same here. Thought I'd change from my F10 530D (only diesel I've owned) to petrol as I predict diesel values will drop soon as I suspect the autumn budget will clobber diesel owners in one way or another.
had a E39 530i previous and so knew what a BMW straight six petrol was like and have no regret what so ever going back to petrol. Don't get me wrong, the 530d was a good car, I liked the low down torque it had but the 540i is just so quiet and more refined in comparison. I didn't want a 4 cylinder no matter how good they are so 540i it had to be. I'd have been possibly tempted to go for a 550i if BMW UK decided on selling it (if the price was right) but that was not to be. It does make me sad to think that we are at or about at the top of where combustion engines will get before we are 'forced' to go with electric cars.(I don't have anything against electric cars but they simply don't work for me at present as I have no where to charge one up at home). My G30 540i feels like a worthy successor to my E39 530i and I wouldn't say that lightly as the E39 was a very good car indeed and one I have big regrets about selling. If I had the space I would have kept it as it was mint. only 55K miles on it when it was 10 years old and nicely specced out. |

I completely agree with you re:the petrol/diesel/electric choices and the 4 cylinder thing. I have no interest in bashing electric or 4 cylinder cars (they are ideal for some people), but for me right now in the g30, it has to be a 6 cylinder petrol for the reasons you outlined above. Part of that is the fact that I now only do around 8k miles per year.
Re: the E39, I am just sorry I never owned one. I hear it was the pinnacle of BMW but at the time that I could have owned one I opted for the E46 coupe as I was younger and didn't need the family car. Little did I know at the time that the 'family' car was actually the better handling car too! |

My bmw history was e39 540i then e61 550i.... Went to the double darkside of a merc e350d. Now have a 530e on order (order placed june.. Lucky if it arrives by Christmas). The 530e on 2 day test drive was so smooth refined and rapid. My daily commute is 22 miles each way with charging both ends so 530e makes lots of financial sense. I will miss the v8 noise but nothing from the smelly rattley diesel...

Just tracked via Genius, car is now status 5000 - planned for assembly
Double checked that my last minute change to piano black went through - it did. I caught it by a matter of hours it would seem; had no idea it would be moving this quick. 3 working days from new order to 5000. |

Dealer said that BMW want to get as many out before end of Sept as possible (end of quarter target?) and so as mine is due Oct 2, I may even see it before end of Sept if the factory get their skates on. My est delivery has already moved from week 41 to week 40 and that's before they even start building it! |

My 540i M Sport G31 should be with me before end of September.
The dealer is keeping up to date. He tells me it has just been released to carrier from the factory. (Code 8200) Can't wait.... Sold my 535d F11 to a member on these forums so I'm having to use the 'wife's' M5 everyday |

Anyway it does seem they are pushing builds through pretty fast at the moment. Either they all had a good summer break or they don't have that many orders for the G30/G31

mobilejo, where is your dealer? Reason for asking is that if in the south of the country, the car will go to Southampton (most likely)
If you have your VIN the you can see where it was built and hopefully therefore work out which port it goes to. I tracked what I was pretty sure the ship it was on to Southampton. My dealer told me that the eta the genius gives you is a pessimestic time and that it will probably arrive slightly earlier (hopefully assuming no delays) certianly doesn't take long to build, mine was about 4 days if I recall correctly. |

there is a detailed article on these forums under ordering and tracking, but in essence.
http://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1315141 If you look at the last 7 digits of the VIN, out of those, the second one designates the factory it is being built in. B designates Austria GRAZ and the others are Germany (Dingle whatever the name is I don't recall) The tracking article the I recall will tell you whihc port the cars go to so keep and eye on the car every day to track where it is and then it's a case for looking for a ship departing there for southampton that ties in with the code saying is on its way. Thats what I did so pretty sure I had the right ship, certianly tied in with the times but I don't know for sure. all good fun though! |
