Well what about poor me, riding 520d. so I would add my own group:
520d: people who think that 530i is too fast or can't afford it. |

Lot of the posts cite low end torque and effortless acceleration at low speeds and passing as a reason to get the M550i.
1. I see a decent number of people who made this comment are coming from F10, so how many have driven the G30? The reduced weight of the g30 helps performance, so less raw power is needed for these cars to feel quick compared to F10 2. Wouldn't a 540d have very similar feel to the 550 at least around town and in traffic congested areas? Clearly it wont have the same top end, but who's driving triple digits in the US? Now that they're taking orders for the diesel, I just find that to be the sweet spot. |

Ultimately, isn't it about what suits you at that particular moment in life irrespective of affordability or anything else that's been thrown around here.
Anyone who has spent time in marketing knows this kinda ideal consumer classification is old school and doesn't really hold true anymore. Just my two cents. |

Two questions:
1) The M550I is supposed to be a competitor to the likes of E43 AMG, Audi S6 (or S7) and Jaguar XF-S V6, right? and 2) Will their be an M550I estate wagon? Or only M550d for touring wagon? |

Hmm the ideal M550 buyer is difficult to answer, most here compare a 540i to the 550i , so what about acceleration and speed it makes no big difference, because you have speed limit in the US, so i can compare it in Germany on the autobahn, and there you can see the difference, a very big difference. You also can feel the sound of a V8 engine and a 6 cylinder engine, both running smooth but in the M550i you have two cars in one ! If you want to drive relaxed and soft with low noise around you, you select the comfort mode and you have an excellence limousine and you glide on the road, perfect for your grandmother and family. Also with an understatement touch. And if you want the beast, select the sport plus mode and you have a real sports car, a better acceleration than a normal 911 and a perfect sound. It really makes fun to push the speed over 200 Km/h up to the limit and you really donīt recognize, that you are driving 250. I donīt like it, when everyone can see a fast car and with the M550i you look like you have a normal average serial car, but with enormous power under the bonnet and no one can see it, that is perfect. I like that.

don't make me giggle. the e43 can barely keep up with the 540i x drive. m550 would compete with the E63, assuming you can ignore the massive price gap. and i'm not even a "bmw fanboy". i was actually trying to buy a 2018 E400 coupe, but ended up with a 540i because my local bmw dealerships were selling these at 8-10K off MSRP while mercedes weren't budging by even a dollar.

Me!
I own a 2016 M3, which I love from the bottom of my heart, BUT i need a bigger car and awd... So I test drove the 2018 X3 40iM, the suspension is horrible, and it looks wired, my M3 with active dumpers kick ass in comparison (ride quality) Now looking at the 550i M, the car looks just right, beautiful proportions, lots of presence, great interior space and lots of power + awd I think BMW has a kick ass product in their hands

I think the M550i is an excellent car. I decided to go for a CPO X5 instead, as I get a much bigger tax write off on vehicles over 6,000lbs. So from a financial standpoint, it made much more sense. Good luck man! M3 expat here as well! |

I am very close to purchasing an M550i as I am in negotiations now. I sold my 2013 Audi S6 (APR Stage 2) last Friday. The M550i is perfect as I have a family and spend most of the time behaving (sort of). I do take some business road trips too. When I want to have fun it is a great car that far exceeds most on the road not that you can legally do that anyway. I used to have RX-7, G35 Coupe, M3 so I like performance vehicles. I simply don't have to drive it like I stole it and I don't want to pay even more money for the M5.
