I watched this live on TV the day it happened.....I was shocked to see this atrocity... I truly sympathize,I know this is very dear to most Americans but this is a far cry from the horrors that happen from around the globe.
Yes sadly history will repeat itself and we have learned nothing.....reality is this scourge will show its ugly face and we will continue to make the same mistakes.
We are but one species but very divided and selfish cultures and our lust for money/control/power will ensure a future of war and terror.
Sad but true

Work is not done, Isis is the next group that needs to be wiped off the face of this planet. I worked 5 minutes away from Pentagon when the plane hit and out building shook so hard... Remembered driving home that day feeling like I was in a nightmare. RIP to all whom died that day and we will never forget.

Ask any woman would they let their child go into a battle instead of a school.
You laughed? Anna, that's disturbing. I get you have an odd sense of humor but thats a whole new low.

Um a week in the forest (army), tired, hungry, and then seeing the whole world going into shit just because we humans are dumb fucks?

I wasn't laughing at the thing happening. I was laughing at myself for being 20 and being still naive enough to think world could be a better place.

2,996 people died that day.

2,606 civilians in the WTC.
246 passengers and crew from UA93.
343 firefighters.
71 law enforcement.
125 at the Pentagon.
19 terrorists.

The biggest loss was our nation's innocence.

Such an awful awful day. It's hard to imagine I was just 14 at the time and now it's 14 years later. Basically I lived my entire 14 years again and the pain of that day never gets easier nor does it go away

Paul Simon - The Boxer from SNL. I tear up every time I watch or remember this.

The cast was interviewed and spoke about the dust from the towers on the officers and firemen clothes that night...

9/11 was a terrible day for our country's past, as well as the chain of events it set off with our inept president (Bush) who decided it was a great excuse to lead us into war in Iraq

I was a sophomore in college down here at St. Mary's University. My best friend since childhood, who lives here as well, called me on the phone yelling at me to turn on the TV "right the fuck now". He told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I booted up my computer (which was my TV) and launched the TV app staring at my monitor knowing exactly what happened. I didn't need the media conjecture, I didn't buy "possible accident", I just knew what element of the world's population was responsible (yeah, I had seen The Siege before and remembered 1993) before I even turned on the TV that morning. My dad put it perfectly: "Well, son, we always knew they were bound and determined to bring those buildings down and now they've done it".

I watched as the first footage of the impact of the South Tower as it came in. Then came the Pentagon and, finally, Flight 93. I was livid, but not fearful. For some reason, living in Military City, U.S.A. I just had no fear. It was eerie the rest of the day not seeing commercial planes in the sky. The sky was quiet and empty, save for the ANG roaring overhead during the next 3 days. After the day was over, I knew what was next. We were gonna go to war...

One thing that really sticks with me, living in this country, is our military and how comfortable they make me. I never forget that I sleep at night because of what they fucking volunteer to do and the overall pretty awesome capabilities my tax dollars give them. I have never given a fuck how much money we spend on defense and never will, even though I'm often inclined to bitch about the efficiency of how we spend that money, where we send our troops, and some of the specific "causes" we send them into danger for sometimes. That said, Afghanistan 2001 wasn't one of those times.

If you think that's the sole reason why the attack occurred, you're sadly mistaken. There's plenty of blame to go around across all party lines and individuals in the government. Sadly even after 9/11 occurred, you would think that would really galvanize everyone into a common purpose, but that really didn't happen. There were plenty of people in various positions in the government whether it be contractors, to government staff, to the policy makers who are to blame for the ineptness and disfunction of our efforts against terrorism. I wonder how things could be if people just stopped being selfish. I too had the same eye opening experience Anna/Lups had after working years in various programs set up after 9/11 to go after terrorists. At best, the actions of individuals were selfish. At worst, it was down right criminal and unethical. I'll just leave it at that.

Huh? I didn't give any reasons for why 09/11 occured....I said it led to the invasion of Iraq which was misguided since there was no evidence Iraq had anything to do with the Sept 11th attacks.

And I'm pointing out that what ever your beliefs about certain actions taken, there were plenty of others in the name of 9/11 that were done behind the scenes which were blatant and didn't involve politics. But you did mention Bush being inept which does infer some conclusions. The same can be said about the previous administration.

I remember that day so vividly. I was 5 years old and just started Kindergarten when all of a sudden the teachers all gathered together, discussing something that seemed to be important. Next thing I know, the teachers were dismissing us even though it was only an hour into the school day, if that. I went home to watch the terror on the news with my family not really understanding the weight of the situation due to my young age. The twin towers were only about 20-30 mins away from my house so I could also see exactly what was going.

Today I thank god that my father is well and alive. My little sister was born earlier in the year so my father took leave to stay home and help out around the house. If It wasn't for my sister being born my father would have been just walking into his office building that morning which is a block away from the Twin Towers.

RIP to all those lost in this tragic event. Never forget.

I mentioned Bush since he was the one who led us into Iraq. I don't think anyone can say that Iraq had anything to do with 09/11, Cheney himself said there was no evidence.

But anyways, no need to get into an argument on the anniversary, just pointing out what a tragedy it was in many diff ways

I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch of the imagination, but I never could wrap my head around the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. For a plane that large, it didn't do much damage and there didn't appear to be any plane parts in any of the photos that were published for the public.

Am I the only one?

NO LOVE FOR ARLINGTON COUNTY I SEE!

Just kidding. I remember where I was when all of that happened. I was 17 and a senior in HS. I had just walked to my government class when someone ran up to me and said a plane had just flown into the WTC.

I walk in and the TV is on in the classroom. I actually start laughing and say "what kind of idiot flies into a building? how could you miss the WTC?? This was on accident right?" and then in a moment I'll never forget, I watched live as the second plane hit.

It was at that point the overall mood went from this "wtf" type of confusion to sheer shock. The shock would then become panic once we learned the Pentagon was also hit and then watching, on live TV, people jumping from windows and the two buildings collapsing.

I know Lups mentioned nothings really changed but that's not true. We pay a 9/11 fee everytime we fly now and we now have to take off our shoes and jump into a giant body scanner whenever we go to the airport. Happy times.

Crazy it's happened 14 years ago though. Of all of it, this one is one of my favorite photos:

Rings E through C on the western side of the Pentagon were wiped out, obliterated (the Pentagon has five above ground rings, E through A, A being the most center ring and E being the outer most ring...the only ring with window views).

It caused a lot of damage especially considering how fortified the Pentagon is to begin with.

The Pentagon had just finished a renovation which contributed in containing the amount of devastation. It's been acknowledged had the renovations not been completed, the damage and death toll would have been higher. I think the fires had to have contributed to the diminished amount of wreckage one would expect. The terrorists purposely chose flights which had a large amount of jet fuel in them for the long flights they were scheduled for.
