Always on?

I'm considering a Dinan Stage 1 for my '18 M550i but I have a question:

Is the system "always on"? That is, could a switch be installed such that the tune can be turned off/on at the flick of this switch? Say, a switch installed in the driver side accessory compartment...

Yes, it can be controlled from a phone app.

From the Dinan site:

Quote:
Dinan's ECU is Bluetooth® Smart meaning that you can change maps simply via a Bluetooth connection on your iPhone or Android device. Just install and you are done!

In this sense the system is "always on." But, via bluetooth, the maps can be adjusted back to factory settings. Do I have that correct?

What happens if the power is cut to the Dinan ECU? Do the signals bypass the ECU and the car reverts to stock? Will the car even operate?

Just finished my test drive with the Stage 1.

First special thanks to:
Jason@Tischer for putting up with my ass.

Also Dinan_Engineering for getting this box turned around in 3 hours. I ordered this unit from Getbmwparts yesterday about 1pm .. UPS delivered it to me at 10am this morning.

Finally to BimmerRick89 for some guidance.

My feelings:
1) It's a nice conservative power bump.
(I come from the JB4 & VF Engineering Tunes on my M4's).

2) Identical to factory for smoothness.

Price is still high for the features you get.
A) More Hp
B) More Tq
C) Ability to Revert to Stock Map
D)... well, there is no D through Z

Note to self installers:
If you have done a JB4, same process. If you haven't.. it's completely doable with just a few tools and a couple relaxed hours.

Note to Dinan:
Seriously, did an employee watch the install video you have on your site and say to out loud:

"Hey, let's keep all the "Letter Boxes" right where our techs' hands are so it's more difficult to make out some specific locations to the sensors"

Hopefully I can hit Cecil County Dragway next Friday night (supposed to rain again this evening) and see what it'll do.

Thanks again to all involved.

Thanks for the early impressions. I guess by saying "conservative" bump, the increase is not obvious out the gate. Is low end noticeably increased or is it more felt at speed?

The OEM HP and TQ ratings are obviously conservative, based on Dinan's base HP rating (530) and most peoples SOTP impressions.

I don't think it was done on purpose but then again their was a lot of anguish when the directive was made to only do video install and not a written one (or a written one and a video) so perhaps that was a subliminal way of sabotaging it.

Regardless, glad you got it installed and are enjoying it thus far. Goal is always factory drivability and power curve, just more of it. While it can throw you back in your seat our intention has never been to have a ridiculous and sudden amount of low end torque -- history has taught us that just tends to lead to shorter lifespans of other components. =)

1/4 Mile Results from this morning.

Stock Map: 12.305 @ 114.68mph
Dinan Stage 1: 11.759 @ 118.90mph

Better increase then I expected, I'm pleased with the results and the tune.

Man, back in the day, an 11 second car would have been barely street legal. When we look back at the muscle cars of the 70's, hitting 13 second 1/4's was fast. Now, hitting 11's in a leather wrapped, luxury 4 door sedan is normal.

I started another thread with more details.

But, the 12.3 run was with:
Massaging Seats on full blast
Cooled seats at max
Heated seats at max
A/C Max Cold
Stereo at Max
Headlights on

I wanted to see the worst possible run.

Hello all,

I'm new here. Have an M550i on order. Plan to get Stage 1.

I live about an hour from the nearest combined BMW / Dinan dealership, but have a Dinan dealer and a separate BMW dealership (where I purchased my M550i) in my town.

As far as warranty is concerned (or any warranty issues) is there any difference in going to a combined dealership versus separate Dinan and BMW dealers?

Any benefits to one vs the other?

Thanks much!

Dinan_Engineering are there any differences between this original tune and the newer Elite V2?

I would like to know that also. Was planning to place an order.
The crank numbers are similar. The picture of the product itself for v2 is very different from the original one... v2 connects to only 2 sensors... unless the picture is wrong.

Seems like they're using the same picture for different cars so I don't know how accurate the they are. When I googled the elite v2 the first one that came up was for the B58 engine and has the same picture as the one that came up for the N63.

Appears the change was due for more standardization and simplification of their product lines.

From Dinan:
V1 and V2 for the N63TU2 offer essentially the same amount of power. V1 actually has slightly more power. V2 also does not not bluetooth functionality.

V2 was released primarily to address 4 and 6 cylinder cars but to make a clean break entirely the whole DME8 line was switched over so we didn't have an outlier variant to muddy up production processes.

Less power sound terrible, would be nice if there was a tune that pushed closer to 90-100 hp/tq instead of 50ish

I would buy the Stage 1 now then - still available.
