As for mounting if you have only the unit and no accessories you can plug it in underneath the glove box in the footwell run the chord under the rubber of the doorman/ B pillar and have it come out by the rear view mirror. That's what I did for the temp install while I figure out where in going to mount the concealed display

I like integrated detectors, and have a Bel STIR + unit. It uses the same receiver as the Redline and 9500ci for superior detection, with the added benefit of GPS lockout for passive x and k band falses (like the 9500ci). It's two-three times the price of the top windshield units, but so clean and outperforms almost everything. Also can add laser diffusers.
You either need to be very handy at custom installs or take it to a pro. Stay away from K40/cobra/whistler. I'll try to post pics of the install in my 535 later.

Bel STIR + install in 535i
Pics. The receiver is in the front mesh grill, display, control unit, and GPS receiver.
My only gripe with the install is the gps unit, I wanted them to hide it under the dash, but they didn't want to try it. Oh well.

V1 + Savvy (makes install very easy and quiets it down a lot) + V1 Connection LE (connects to your mobile to enable custom sweeps)

Beltronics STi-R plus
Laser jammers : Laser interceptors quad or this canadian company google ALP.... They seems to have the best integration over LIQ for laser jamming. |

Escort Passport 9500ix.
I have had a variant of this detector for nearly 9 years. I have never had a ticket. I tried a V1 for a few months, just for fun. I could not stand the false alarms. Some people swear by them but I think the arrows are a gimmick. Others' mileage may vary.

I used the savvy OBD plug for the V1. The trim of the headliner and A pillar have gaps that allow wires to be routed from behind the mirror all the way down to the driver side footwell where the OBD plug is located. Completely hidden and you don't have to take anything apart. Honestly, this was 10x easier than the fuse tap on the e92 and even that was easy. I didn't know so many people wanted to see this. I'll try to do it tomorrow.

Down here in VA, where legal is an issue, the Bel STi-R is our only salvation to hide from the man.
