Dinantronics x - 2016-2020 bmw m550i/750i/x5 50i/x7 50i
I stumbled across this on the Dinan site. Released last week and they seem to have pulled the V2? This does not seem like it would be a replacement? It is a ton cheaper, but a third of the gains. My Dinan shop tells me they can not be used together.

Dinan addressed this in a different section.
They have changed their tuners to the X as the cost of making them is a lot cheaper than their previous units but allows the same control, power and safety. They also stopped matching BMW warranty on piggybacks; you only get a product warranty in case of defects. They are keeping their warranty match for all their flash tunes. This should make Dinan prices on piggyback more competitive with other brands.

X is essentially a rebrand/relaunch. The raw chips used in the V2 were on their way to being discontinued before the pandemic and that was only hastened during it so we were going to have to source a new chip in it anyway. At the same time the old DINANTRONICS with the NASA harnesses really needed to be switched out given the costs involved and the aging product line (those old harnesses cost more then a full DPT X kit). So we decided to just do a full replacement of the inline tuner line entirely and the DPT X was born. The X is best thought of as the next generation of the DPT Elite V2. The X just has bluetooth control whereas V2 did not and doesn't carry the factory matching warranty. Going forward that factory matching warranty is reserved for the Dinan+ flashes on the engine tuning front. Power wise V2 and X in the case of the M550i are basically the same -- V2 had max gains of 45 WHP / 55 TRQ whereas X is 40 WHP / 52 TRQ. Factory matching warranty on previously sold V2's is still intact. Just piggybacks going forward will not have a the factory matching warranty option is all. |

Perfect, thanks for weighing in. Looks like I could have saved $1,500, but I will rationalize that as the warranty. I am sure you guys thought about this a lot internally, but one of the main reasons I chose Dinan was for the warranty. So now this new X without a warranty is competing against BM3, JB, etc. with nothing to distinguish itself by. Just feedback. If Dinan didn't offer the warranty on the V.2, I am not sure I would have gone with it or I would have definitely considered the competition. What's your competitive advantage? The Dinan name?

Ultimately the Dinan engine tuning line is going to be VERY diverse in options. With each option having its own direct competitors and touching pretty much all permutations of style of tune (piggyback/flash) and coverage (factory matching warranty/limited warranty). When all is said and done we should have an option for everyone no matter what your preference is. Ultimately may be a few more variants in the mix but the below is a sampling of currently available tuning lines from Dinan that should propogate to all ~2015+ platforms eventually given enough time. Dinan+ - Flash tune with facory matching warranty Stage 1 (and beyond where applicable) - Flash Tune. Limited warranty. Dinanflash Handheld - DIY Flash tuning w/ handheld programmer. Limited product warranty. SPORT (where applicable) - Basic boost controller. Limited product warranty. X - In-Line/piggyback tuner. Limited product warranty. |

Regardless, with piggybacks there is a fine balance with what it possible to attain. That 40-50 HP range on the early M550i is about the limit in our eyes without getting into the realm of consistent issues (setting CELs) with fringe cars that may be closer to the edge of factory tolerances or the need for outside influences (whether that be race gas / ethanol mixes or additional hard parts). If you look at the competing landscape (in-line/piggybacks specifically) everyone is about the same in terms of performance when you take out those tertiary variables. Now if you want to play with fuel mixes and/or custom tune with some additional hard parts with an in-line that is the domain of the JB4. They do it well and for some that is enjoyable. But that also introduces a lot of variance (and emissions complications) which will cause some additional haeartache. Our goal has always been to offer a solution that causes the least amount of heartache and can be set and forgot about if desired. |

I just looked at my receipt from my Dinan shop. You are right, it was $1,803.95 plus tax and $130 to install.
