Garage List 2010 M5 [10.00]
2016 BMW 340xi M Sport [9.00] 2019 X5 50i M Sport [5.50] 2010 535xi [0.00] 2013 M5 [0.00] 2012 X5 M [0.00] |
Road Trip to Florida tomorrow!
First road trip in my new-to-me 2013 M5! Will update with stats,...mileage,..speed, etc. My goal is at least 24mpg and to get there safe and sound. I will be traveling from the Northern VA area.
Update #1: Made it to my first Rest Stop,...at the North Carolina/VA state line,...a stop I've been using for years. I normally take a 20 minute break here,...no matter what. Drive modes are: E, S, S, and cruise control. No A/C use yet,...due to overcast and cool temps. Update #2: Made it to my destination without issues! The M5 performed as expected! In fact,...a 13 hour drive and I wasn't even beat up,...no aches, etc. I have all types of road data,...speed, road temps, Mpg, etc. FWIW, my lowest mpg was 24.2! Awesome!! ...cheers! Final Update: Here are a few pics from my roadtrip,....the accident scene of a jackknifed 18-wheeler near Emporia, VA, NC Rest Stop signage,...a Tesla Charging Station at a major Exit in NC; a pic of my M5,....some OBC road data, of which, some quite interesting (MHO),...like the way the historical Efficiency Data can be recalled. Here is something interesting,...the M5 really isn't a gas hog,...the M5's owners are. In pass BMWs I've owned, once you're well into your roadtrip and the "average fuel consumption is well settled",...one must be really hard on the throttle for some time in order for the "average" to change drasticly. No such thing with the M5,...if you dip into the turbos hard,...quick and often,...your average MPGs will go to crap really quick,...in real time. LOL Now mind all, I think didn't buy the M5 to be an "MPG Queen",....but it's nice knowing that these cars can even perform well in the miles per gallon area when asked to. Oh! Another thing, not once did I "Reset" the on-board information. Of special note, after refilling the tank at my first gas stop,...at the same area where I captured the Tesla Charging Station,...I crunched the number, i.e., miles driven/gallons used and the numbers were in line with the M5s OBC. In fact, I put in 11.3 gallons,...and traveled some 300 miles or so. That's even with the 45+ minute traffic delay. Moving on,... By know, it's around mid-day in North Carolina,..and my tolerance for needing A/C is 83-degrees,...once the temps reached this,...I don't too much give a ratts ass about "the best MPGs",...it's all about being comfortable. Your temp tolerance may vary,..and most likely does. All the same,...surprisingly, the M5's MPGs didn't go to crap. After continuing on my trip,..I'd say use of the A'/C amounts to about a 1 mpg difference. Moving on farther down the road,... Now this is interesting. By now, I'm in South Carolina,..the roadway sucks,...especially the "Right Lane",...it's beaten to death from the weight of the heavy trucks. The tires are really noisy in this area,...I MEAN REALLY NOISY! Upon noticing this, I also couldn't help but notice how quite the tires are on better conditions tarmac,...literally night and day. A bit farther down the road,...way farther,... I'm now in the State of Georgia,...and noticed that even though the roadway is level for the most part,...my MPGs are going down. Mind you,...the cruise control had been initially set at 75mph,...then 77mph,...with a mixture of slowing,...accelerating, etc. I noticed that my MPG average was slowly creeping down. So I'm thinking it's because of all of the maneuvering around traffic. But then I happen to take a look at the Temp Gauge and saw a whopping 101-degrees! Well,...that'll do it for sure. I had no idea it was that HOT outside! All an all,..the high temps of the Deep South didn't cause my fuel mileage to dipped below 24.2 MPG and that said,...I accomplished my goal of 24 MPG as stated earlier. Note,...the pics were captured on my phone,...and will be uploaded shortly ...What a Car! Cheers!

Despite my best intentions I can never seem to stay in E for throttle for more than stop and go traffic. I'm always back in S+ and ready for quick bursts of speed.
I'm in northern VA too but haven't made a long road trip since buying the M6 in February. |

Must be a 6 speed manual? With DCT, I see 2000 RPM at 80 MPH.
I can get 24-25 on pure highway cruising, but as noted, playing with it quickly kills MPG. as does 80+ cruising, which I did in 70 mph zones in I-95 GA & Fla, along with everyone else

Maybe it's just me, but this is one of the oddest threads I've ever seen on this forum. What's the point of buying an M5 if you just drive it in Efficient mode with no A/C and try to get 25MPG. Seems pointless to me and a waste of a fun car.
I hammer mine down every opportunity I get - couldn't care less if I get 14 or 24 mpg and I sure as hell am not going to be sweating it out on 80+ degree day to try to eek out another mile per gallon. Different strokes for different folks I guess. |

Tha said,...I have never 'thrashed' any car I've ever owned,...and don't plan to start with ownership of my M5! I consider automobiles to be a work of art and engineering,...especially more so BMWs,...and even more,....BMWs that come from the factory with an ' ///M badge installed on the boot! Just say'n.

So, respectfully, perhaps this thread may potentially be of interest and value for some, but clearly wasn't for you afterall. Cheers...
