If you don't pay for car in cash your just renting from the bank as well, but with the liability of depreciation and a chance of getting hit by someone and being stuck with a car with bad car fax(aka large drop in resale value). Leasing is controlled and your free of liability and with fixed cost thru "renting". Your renting the car either way, either BMW holds your title or the bank does (again unless your wiring/cutting check in full)
good point. But I'm pretty sure the lease payment on a good spec 2020 m550i would be well over $1000 and I'm not willing to spend that much. At least with financing a car you have some equity after 5-6 years if you keep cars for 5-6 years like I do. I feel like when I mod up a car you've put your mark on it and it's "you". If the car has good features I like keeping for while and enjoying what I've done to the car for a long while.
You can always buy the car at end of lease too if you love it, if not you get to walk away at lease end. I feel like I'm pushing a lease on you lol
My car was $87k and I'm under $1k a month including taxes.

I had a 2018 M550 Xdrive, great car, lease payment was around $1050/mo
I now leased a loaded M340i , payment $689/mo

M550
-more luxury, I miss the multicontour seats.
-heavier, more disconnected
-I like the body style better than new 3 series.

M340
-More fun, I like the suspension more that the M550
-It has all the technology the M550 has and more.
-it feels faster or as fast as the M550, is like a smaller M550
-great suspension and exhaust
-better gas mileage and lower price
-I have more fun driving the M340 than the M550
-Almost as roomy as the M550, a little smaller inside.

Today, I enjoy the M340 more than the M550, I do not like the body style of the M340 as much, but I enjoy the $350 less per month.

the adaptive cruise control on the M340 , when traffic starts to move again, the M340 accelerates on its own, on the M550 I had to press resume or press the gas until aprox 20mph and then it would resume.

the backup assistant is great, i use often to back out.

the steering assist is a little better on the M340, it does not bounce from side to side like on the M550.

Test drove back to back

And found m550 handled as good
No competition in acceleration
And no competition in luxury

I’m paying 875 for my 2020 m550 (taxes up front)

m340 didn’t make sense especially coming from a 440 mppsk + jb4 - which would destroy m340 stock imo

If I was north of 1k per month and less than 100hp difference then yes - easy decision

I am sort of in the same position.

I currently have a 540i, which I absolutely love. My lease will be up in August 2021. As we don't get the 550i here, if I want to upgrade I have to buy an M5, which I can't afford.

I have asked my dealer to give me a M340i for a test drive. The biggest feature of teh 5 for me is the ride comfort and interior quality. I can do without the interior quality to a point, but I fear the ride quality will be hard to get over.

15 years ago I would not even look at something like a 5, but now my requirements of a car has changed quite a lot. I am over handling and outright performance and prefer luxury and effortless performance.

My experience exactly, except to that list I would also add Infiniti Q50/60 400 AWD as a cost effective alternative to the Series 3. Therefore, my options were either BMW Ser 5 (or 8), or go to another car make.

I would go for the smaller car if you don't mind the smaller back seat and less trunk space, just me...

@Dutt1113 Did you ever make a decision on 340 vs 550?
