Non-built in Radar detector....

Plan to eventually get a built in system (with laser jammers, etc) installed, but not right away.

SO on a temporary basis, looking at buying a dash mounted system that will run in my car and, once I upgrade, go to the MB wagon. Mostly for highway driving, but also some city/etc.

Don't need stealth (they are legal here and in the places I'll do most driving)

Was debating between Beltronics STi Magnum and Pro 500.

Any reviews/comments on those?

Other options that are better?

Have you considered COBRA ESD-9117? Great price and it can do all the things you'll get from the ones you are looking at.

I had always heard bad things about Cobra...(though I am still using in the other car a 10+ year old one which has saved me from more than one ticket on the highway and has not let me down....)

I run a Bel STI and love it. Had a 7500 and a 8500 X50 before and this one has less false alarms. Will probably stay with it for a while unless I find something that can tell the difference from a cop and blind spot radars.

I recommend escort redline with band segmentation, it has the best range. You really don't need laser jammers if you drive smart.

I'm a Valentine 1 camper myself. Addicted to the dang arrows which are always so useful as to what to ignore or pay attention to, and what direction its coming from...don't think I could tolerate any other system that just beeps at me at this point, one drawback of the V1 once you've had it for a while.

You can do band segmentation with the V1 as well, equal sensitivity to the redline for Ka and better laser sensitivity (if it goes off still means they probably reading your speed at that moment so there is something to be said for "shifters" if you live in a laser area, although it did save my butt for sure once in VT). I have K and X bands turned off as they are not used in my state. So if it makes a peep, I slow down....if I go out of state I pull out my iPhone and transfer my out of state program to the thing (takes 10 seconds - turns on K band in a highly filtered fashion, and X band if I'm going to NJ)...

I've owned a Valentine 1 and an Escort 9500xi. I like the Escort as it's my current one, but I would recommend either.
