Wish I'd bought a 2013 M3 - What to do?
Damn I wish this car was CLEARLY better than the e90 M3. Mine is 5 1/2 years old and I don't want to hold on to it as it ages but with a bad back and it's price I don't think a 911 is in the cards so I wish I could know I would like an M4 better but it's just not clear. Of course a test drive but so hard to know in a brief dive with the salesperson there. Reviews are SO( not the color) mixed and divergent re same issues ie sound, turbo lag, handling. I am not anti M4 but now wishing I had gone from my 2009 to a 2013 and avoided this. Any thoughts?

In my test drive, it was clearly better than the e90 m3 for MY purposes and desires. In every way.
Some people are more about magazine times or trackability. Those aren't my focuses and as a result for me it was immediately and clearly superior in all the ways I cared about it being different. |

As you say, it's difficult to get a very good idea at test drives BUT it's a million times better than to listen to what someone else thinks unless you ask a person that you know has very similar preferences to yours. People will say anything to make their points valid or seem like they care of the same things if you ask now. You need to know from either knowing them personally or from a long history of comments or pro reviews. Worst thing you can do is to trust some arbitrary person here that you will feel the same.
Multiple test drives is the best advice I know to give if you are on the fence. |

It is clearly better in every way and it shows in 95% of the reviews. However that doesn't mean that it necessarily suits you. Look at the GT-R or 911.

Go to the performance delivery school at the BMW PDC for a track day. It's relatively inexpensive, and from all accounts, is great fun. They'll let you rag on one enough to make your mind up on the spot.

I'm buying a used M4 in a few years when the price is down to like 45k.
However I drove the 2015 M3 and compared to my E93 M3 it wasn't that great. The steering was heavy and the seats are worse. It also costs like a lot more than before. Leasing one is a good deal but only for 4 years. It's never better than buying used though.

If you configure the car similarly, meaning no LEDs, CCBs, full leather, and those things that weren't available on the outgoing model, the prices have actually remained pretty close if you consider the gas guzzler tax as part of the base cost of an e9x. This is the thing that really surprised me about the new M3/4 and part of the reason I am buying one.

This will be my third M3 (E46, E92, F80) and IMO, the F80 is a greater leap from the E92 then the E92 was from the E46. That's just my opinion. But to the OP, try to drive the car. Even in a short test drive, you my be able to get a decent idea of whether you like it a little, somewhat, or much more than the E92. If you're still not sure after the test drive, then hold on to your car and money for now. No sense spending money on something you don't actually love just to have the latest thing. |

You should get the M4 but if you decide to get another E90 M3, mine is for sale. It's a 2011 but with lots of cosmetic mods and 33,000 miles.

I can't believe people keep falling for the E9X fanboi troll threads like this. I understand some people have sunk so much money into their E9X's and can't get it back out or may not be able to swing an F8X car right now but I never expected this many troll threads and outright hate for a new, superior car that rendered theirs obsolete.
