Pre-owned Florida car

I am looking at a 2014 car located in Naples Florida. Curious if any Florida residents think salty ocean air is a corrosive issue for cars? It’s a fairly high-end car, and I presume it has been garaged, as it appears in excellent shape. But just wondering if this should be a concern to me?

Eventually, corrosion will occur, yes - but BMW has a standard 12 year corrosion warranty.

My view is that as long as it checks out (no accidents), and is clean/good in every other way, you should be good to go with a 5-6 year old used car (with maintenance/having to replace crap as needed... might want to look into an extended warranty if it's offered?)

If the residence the car was parked at is next to the ocean (waterfront property), I have seen corrosion occur on various cars within a couple of years. Otherwise, it should be fine.

Very true. As a South Florida resident I will say from personal experience there's a huge difference between a car stored/parked on oceanfront property as compared to the same vehicle parked even 1/4 mile inland. The oceanfront salt air can be brutal.

OP, find out the address where the car was parked and look it up on Google maps. If that's not an option, I highly suggest inspecting the underside of the car, specifically suspension components, wheel hubs, exhaust, etc. As well as under the hood. Also, if the tire valve stem caps are missing very likely the valves may need to be replaced. I've seen the tire valve issue many times. Sometimes the corrosion gets so bad you can't add air to the tires.

Would any of that corrosion be covered under 12 year BMW rust warranty?

No, because the BMW warranty is called a rust perforation warranty and covers only rust to the point where it rusts through the panel or part. Surface corrosion appears to be not covered. BMW also disclaims an exception for various causes including outside influences.

I suppose if you live coastal, and had rust through, they would cover it. But they'll likely stick by the terms for parts with surface rust that haven't rusted through.
