BMW 5 Series Updates For Summer 2019. M550i Gets New V8

COMMENTS

Changes coming for the 5 Series this Summer.

BMW 5 Series: new V8 engine, plug-in hybrid model now also with all-wheel drive, attractive optional extras and packages.

A generation change for the V8 engine and another plug-in hybrid model make the range of drive systems available for the BMW 5 Series even more appealing. From July 2019 the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan will be fitted with the latest update of the eight-cylinder engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. The new V8 has an optimised crankcase and larger turbochargers positioned in the “V” between the cylinder banks, and develops maximum output of 390 kW/530 hp plus peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The eight-cylinder teams up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, intelligent all-wheel drive and model-specific chassis technology to generate standout dynamics.

From July 2019 the latest-generation high-voltage battery will give the BMW 530e Sedan a longer all-electric operating range. The plug-in hybrid model will now also be available with intelligent all-wheel drive. The link-up of four-cylinder petrol engine and electric drive system endow the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan with system output of 185 kW/252 hp.

BMW Laserlight with BMW Selective Beam will be added to the optional package of innovations exclusively for the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Sedan from July 2019. BMW Laserlight has a main beam range of up to 650 metres and is also available as an individual option for the BMW M5.

A new BMW Individual Composition will be available for all BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring model variants from July 2019. The precisely coordinated design and equipment features for the exterior and interior include a BMW Individual paint finish and 20-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminium satinated, comfort seats with active seat ventilation, BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino, a BMW Individual leather steering wheel, an Anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner, ambient lighting, a BMW Individual instrument panel in black leather and BMW Individual interior trim strips in Piano Finish Black.

New optional extra: BMW Drive Recorder.

The BMW Drive Recorder is another new addition to the options list. It can be ordered in conjunction with Parking Assistant Plus and is available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 7 Series, BMW 8 Series, new BMW X5 and new BMW X7. The BMW Drive Recorder uses the cameras of the various driver assistance systems to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before saving the recordings so they can be either watched later on the Control Display when the car is stationary or exported via the USB port.

Drivers can therefore shoot videos while driving through spectacular scenery, for example, or performing impressive manoeuvres on the race track, and then send them to their mobile device and share them. Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length, comprising the 20 seconds of video saved immediately prior to the Drive Recorder being activated and the next 20 seconds. The Drive Recorder can be started at any time from the iDrive menu. Another benefit of the system is that, in the event of a collision, the 20 seconds before the accident and the 20 seconds following it are automatically recorded and saved, so they can be referred back to in any subsequent reconstruction of the incident.

Very cool! I scooped the admin with the same post but mine was deleted

Wow 530hp and 553 ft-lbs.. incredible

This is the car I have been waiting for and now I am torn since it does not have the updated grill like the 7 series / 3 series. Maybe I buy used and then buy next year when the grill is updated... decisions, decisions

Didn't the G20 come out less than two years ago? Why are we already getting a life-cycle?

Why do I need to jump to a 550 just to get laser headlights when it’s available on the 330? Why not on the 530 or 540?

The drive recorder is awesome. No need to install dash cam anymore. But the text omits the 5...sucks this is only on the 3,7,x5 and 8

Not an LCI as far I can see, looks like each year/summer there are also incremental updates. All good.

The driver recording reads to me as driver activated so don't worry, no big brother watching....yet

so its getting the same engine as the m850. that means the m550 is going to sound incredible. that new design is the first turbo engine from bmw that doesn't need any mods to sound really good.

Are they saying that my 2018 M550xi engine is garbage with 486hp? Maybe it's time that I switch back to Audi and get the RS5 sportback!

Can't wait to see/hear that new V8!

I wonder if the driver recording is also capable of doing parking recording... that'd be neat.

This absolutely renders the M5 an emotional purchase as the M550i is now officially a BEAST, and the better, cheaper, still super fast, rational choice for those who don't want the zero compromises (and oh yeah pay an extra $25k) M5. This will be a 0-60 in 3.5 car, guaranteed. Holy smokes.

Slow down with the guarantees.

The current car has been dyno'd stock at 540HP, once again BMW underrating in a big way. This updated engine may be rated closer to the reported figures. Also, the M850 used different gearing, which would effect 0-60 performance. Need to wait until real world tests to see the new engines effect.

FINALLY, DRIVE RECORDER!!!

For years I have been wondering why car companies haven't done this, especially when they have surround view cameras already! all they needed was software to link them to idrive hard drive. And with how cheap and large hard drives are now, makes perfect sense.

this is awesome, no more need for a dash cam!

Just wish it was an option on the X3M as that is the next car I am considering.

LOL That's why you never want to get the first model of any BMW series because the next one is always better. Quick example, Like the F80 M3 came out in 2015, and THEN 2016 is an LCI AND COMPETITION is offered.

I doubt its just BMW reporting number closer to actual dyno. First post even says "new V8", "optimized crank", "larger turbos"

Considering what the Alfa Romeo Stelio Quad and Mercedes GLC AMG acheived with 500 HP and lower torque and heavier weights, this could be 0-60 in around 3.2-3.3 seconds... I mean the M5 was 2.8 by C&D with only 70hp more

Also I have a feeling when the M8 power is announced the M5 will also get an update in 1-2 years.

The 2019 M850 hits 0-60 in 3.6. It has better off line gearing, so unlikely the M550 will shave that much off the time.

And it'll be even quicker than that car due to the AWD.

? Car and Driver tested the M850i at 3.3 seconds 0-60
1/4 mile at 11.5 seconds!
M850i also weighs 4400 lbs (only 14 lbs less than M550i) so I would expect them to have similar results.

Old M550i hit 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 12.3
with 74 less HP 73 less torque, those are huge jumps (over 15% increase)

The US 530e already has available xDrive, so it would appear that the information in these 2020 model update summaries is for the global market, rather than being US specific. This could mean that other details, such as changes in standard equipment, may also not be relevant to the US market.
