I guess I should clarify my issue with the filter movement. The filter is nice and tight on the MAF housing. I had more trouble with the entire thing bobbing around while driving the car. I could hear it rattling under the hood. Anyway, I was able to secure it so it has no movement.

BTW does this void any type of warranty on the car? Ronin, I know your out of warranty though. Any thoughts?

without a heat shield this is probably less effective than the stock airbox with a K&N filter in it. I'm sure it sounds good though!

I'm curious about that too. In the mean time I fabricated my own heat shield out of old popcorn tin aluminum that was hanging out in the garage. It seems to work pretty good so far. Well see how it goes for the time being. I'll pot up pics later.

Yes, At Speed has finalized their design (they will probably use mine as a template) so call them and ask. They're work is top notch!
Also, I asked my BMW dealer (BMW of Silver Spring) about bolt on mods (intake, exhaust, etc.). They indicated that "as long as its not an electrical mod like a chip or tune" then there shouldn't be any warranty issues. |

Thanks. The best thing was all it cost me was a little time and effort. I just used a piece of cardboard first to get the proper template and the rest is history. So far I haven't been able to tell too much in the butt dyno area (I was on vaca all week). However, the sound quality is top notch just as ronin1 mentioned earlier. The engine definitely sounds noticeably throatier. Now we just need some exhaust expert to fab up something nice for the back end. I'll be able to tell if my mpg improves after driving to work this coming week. Also, in case you're wondering, I did spray paint the aluminum with rust oleum black grill spray before I put on to finish the look. I also put on a pair of cyba scoops to help the cooler air get in when I'm moving. Good times.

I haven't seen a change in gas mileage at all..in fact, it's probably gotten worse, but that's because I enjoy hearing the new sound coming out of my engine (last fuel up was 14.7 mpg....seriously).

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update -- I called AT Speed this morning and had a chat with Matt. He said that they did finalize the design for the heat shield but haven't settled on pricing yet. I'm going to work with him to set up a package that will include the proper cone filter and perhaps something to lock the filter in place to prevent rattles, as well as documenting my own install for other people interested in the mod.
Excited about this mod -- I'm glad that diesel owners finally get some love! This mod combined with the exhaust work that Ron1n's working on will give our machines the true sound they deserve |

I did the same thing 2 months ago with a K&N filter. Had it on for a month. While it gives it a cool sound, really didn't feel any difference in power. In fact it got the engine bay much dirtier, also noticed more dust around the MAF. Decided to put the stock back on...

I just bought a filter earlier tonight to try and fabricate a heatshield with. I'm going to pull out the airbox, pop on this filter and take some measurements for a heatshield. But I'll take a spin in the car with the new filter on and try to snag some videos for you guys as I'm curious to see what the sound and butt dyno difference is.
I'll check back in tomorrow night

The only K&N that I found is the one that fit in the dropbox.
I'll take some more video, too, but you'll find it hard to hear on camera when inside the car, because of the other ambient sounds. Time to see how well my 4S does 1080p. :P

You get a better feel in the second link...you can hear it better on acceleration, deceleration, and shifts.

Ron1n, you must have stole my car and drove it. . I can hear the engine noises pretty good in both vids. My car sounds the exact same way. I've also noticed that there is a nice engine rumble from 30-40 mph and 2,000 rpm's. Thanks for posting the vids.
