Dealer Fuel Injector Service - worth it or a total rip off?

I took my car in for a routine oil change. They offered me a "fuel injector" cleaning service for $350. I asked her what that entails and she said they run a special cleaner through the system. I politely declined.

I'm just assuming that this is a scam of some kind - and it's just an over the counter fuel injector cleaner that I could buy myself at Pep Boys…. But figured I'd post up here to see if I am just ignorant and there is some reason why what they offer is actually worth the money. But I doubt it.

I did find out my car is due for spark plugs - that is covered under my extended service contract.. I'm guessing new plugs are not necessarily cheap on a V8…

If car is running rough, stalling, or hesitating, a bottle of fuel injector cleaner poured into the tank may improve or eliminate the issue. In specific cases, the solvent/detergent may free up deposits inside the fuel system and actually worsen the issue (causing a bigger clog). You can try to get the vehicle up on the interstate and drive for 10-15 minutes at a high (but safe) rate of speed to hopefully clean things out.

If this doesn't work, a trip to the dealer or a reputable repair shop may be in order. They can remove the injectors and mount them in a machine designed to clean them out. This is a much more involved process, so expect higher costs. Bottom line is don't use any of these products or methods unless there's a problem. Check your manufacturer's recommended service intervals. Do they even list fuel injector cleaning/service or is this the dealer just trying to generate some extra revenue?

Revenue boosting snake oil. They aren't making anything off you with the prepaid maintenance so they need some juice. They'll try the classics of an alignment or a fuel injector service...

I have the full Maintence pack. I said sure do it if BMW recommends it. They said Ah… this is not covered. I said my policy covers all BMW recommended services. They said Ah… this is a suggested not recommended service.
Screw that !

What’s next blinker fluid ?

I throw Techron in my a tank before each oil service.

I’m running perfectly at 36k.

Gotta love that! Did you ask them to explain the difference between "suggested" and "recommended"? Ha!

At 36K you're barely broken in. Top Tier gas or the occasional bottle of Techron will keep things cleaned up pretty nicely.

Like everyone said, don't bother unless you have a problem. Same fluid. If they were to remove injectors and clean it that would have been over $1000 in dealer labour pricing.

Since no one answered on Spark plugs; they are around $20 per a plug and 2-3 hours of labour.
Not that expensive. I recently did my 6cylinder. Took me around 1 hour and about $120 for the plugs.

When using Lane Change Assist the blinker fluid really drops quickly.

OP, that's called a "stealership", F them.

Other than the obvious , your blinker fluid must be running low...

As you see, it's only good for 6K blinks.

Only use Tier 1 fuel. It has all the injector cleaning additives one needs if used consistently.

It's not a scam I've had my mechanic do it outside of the dealership for $100 before and it smoothed out the idle. I say it's not a scam because I watched him do it. First they disconnect the fuel lines from the engine and plug in their own from a compressor, where there is a bottle of cleaner in-line, hanging from your hood latch. The car runs off of this mixture until the bottle runs out, and engine stalls.

I would not pay for this, if you have direct injection as it won't clean the valves the way port injection does, so in this case, it's a complete waste of money.

Its not a scam but is a complete waste of money. Isn't that the definition of a scam?

Heh. I got the alignment suggestion as well after a warranty service visit. Car drives perfectly and tire wear is even across the board. I politely declined.

OP should do the same with the fuel injector service. Just pour in a bottle of techron before your next oil change. Preferably burning nearly the entire tank of gas on a nice long drive.
