M550 wheel spacers and locking lugs?
I have a stock M550 with 668M 20" wheels.
I was thinking of doing a conservative set of spacers. 12mm front and 15mm rear. I currently have stock wheel bolts with the OEM locking lugs - one lock on each hub. I assume I would need extended bolts to go with the spacers. Do they make locks that are extended to use with spacers? Thanks.

Yes, you can find some on ECS for pretty cheap https://www.ecstuning.com/News/ECS_L..._BMW_M14X1_25/
Or if you want higher quality ones, McGard brand probably makes them too since they're the ones making a lot of OEM wheel locks. |

The locks are more of an inconvenience, rather than add any security. There are all sorts of "universal" key way sets to defeat the BMW and other brands of locks, so they do not deter a thief. I've removed them from both my BMWs. I don't have them on my Ferrari or truck either. BMW puts them on their cars because they are a great "add on" sale...

Wheel theft is a concern for sure, more so the potential damage from the theft. I have seen cars left in such away that there was damage to the brake calipers, discs and even under carriage and fenders. I just don't believe wheel locks offer a significant deterrent anymore. But I certainly wouldn't say no one should get them... by all means. But a garage and secured parking will make a greater difference. But some don't have the luxury of a garage. |

Dave, I think he is saying tongue in cheek, that big deal if his wheels get stolen, he will just get another new shiny set from the insurance company. Although there would be a deductible. I would never see the bright side in in having my wheels stolen. I am sure there would be damage involved as well. Thieves aren't very careful jacking it up and supporting it.
As to the OP's question on spacers. Yes you need new longer bolts and you should definitely ditch the locks, they are a pain in the ass. I think 15mm in the rear with 668M's will leave you underwhelmed. I went with 12mm/17mm and I feel like I 18mm out back would be perfect. I went with Dinan spacers, they come in 10,12,15,17 and 20. 20 would be too much out back. In terms of bolt size, pick your spacers over at Dinan's site and it will tell you what bolts you need.

Back (for 17mm spacers): https://www.dinancars.com/products/w...arts/D220-0006 Front (for 12mm Spacers): https://www.dinancars.com/products/w...arts/D220-0005 1mm difference on the H&R vs Dinan spacers on the smaller side is fine for the bolts. They should catch and secure just fine. That said, just add 1mm to each lug and find an alternative if it makes you feel more comfortable. Just don't skimp on ebay lugs.

Hey guys. When I did my spacers, I bought the bolts from ECS Tuning...along with the H&R spacers. I did 12.5mm front and 20mm rear. They sell then with bolts, or you can buy them separately. I think or the rear I bought the kit and for the front I already had 10mm spacers and going up 2.5mm was still within spec to reuse the extended bolts I already had.
Reading their listings you can figure out what their recommendations are. Or you can calculate yourself by taking the stock length and adding what is needed for the spacer +- a mm or two. |
