I do it whenever it is convenient. I mean sometimes it's 1/4 and sometimes it's less. Most of the times it's around 30 or so miles left.

I usually start looking for a gas station when my tank is about 1/8 to 1/4 full. I never let it run empty, just to be on the safe side.

Wow...reviving an almost 8 year old thread about when to put gas in the car.

I usually tank up before going on a longer road trip. Otherwise when I come home from one. If I do enough putting around town to burn through 3/4 of a tank of gas in the summer I'll tank up there, but in winter I don't like having under a half a tank of gas so I'll tank up when it gets down to half. If I'm doing a real road trip I tend to plan ahead and make sure I have enough fuel to get to the next big center with about 100 km of range extra. I tend to drive about 5-600 km on that tank in one sitting and find that after about 6 hours in the car it feels pretty good to walk around and get fuel into it.

Winter at about half tank. Summer I let it run as low as possible, because I think you get some of the last guy's gas selection when you fill (heard it can be almost a gallon), and I don't want to dilute the premium too much. Considered trying to follow 'premium users' but it seldom works out, I don't have the patience, but imagine people would get hinkey if I hung around waiting for a nicer car to fill up before using a pump.

I think the sensor has buffer or underestimates range, perhaps using the lowest recent mpg to figure it - lowest range I've seen is about 15miles, but estimated over a gallon left based on what I was able to put in. Every time they ask on a survey, I tell 'em that what I'd want is a bigger gas tank - even a few more gallons would be much more convenient.

Whenever I'm by Costco. Sometimes at half. Sometimes with couple miles of reserve left. Whatever. Doesn't matter a lick.

About a 1/3 left, or sometimes when the light comes on. Usually it's now before I reach 150mi to empty.
