Idrive 7 retrofittable at some point?

Does anyone think that idrive 7 will be retrofittable at some point for the g30? It seems like most bmws have been able to jump 2-3 generations of idrive fairly easy with a new screen and headunit.

The screen size is 2 inches bigger not to mention the dashboard.

But isn't the physical space the instrument cluster sits in the exact same? Doesn't look like bmw changed anything physically to accommodate the new idrive and cluster.

Outside of physical changes (I'm not very clear on changes here). I would imagine it would be.

The iDrive 7 in my MY2020 530e feels like a "lite" version of iDrive 7 that could be easily placed onto the existing G30 platform. That doesn't mean there aren't changes that are more impactful that are deeper than just what I can see from the cockpit.

Why would you want to?

You could be right, but there could also be a change in the mounting points, wiring harness, etc.

Really, I think the iDrive 7 sucks and that was one reason I bought a 2019 instead of waiting for a 2020. My car is in the shop right now so I've got an X5 loaner with iDrive 7 and I hate it, hate it, hate it.

I am not 100% sure that the instrument cluster is the same. The point is, the display is completely different and it would cost you a fortune to retrofit something like that – even if it was possible - which I don't think it is.

Hi Guys. I would have a question connected to this. I have ordered a new 530e it comes with it comes with live cockpit plus (operation system 6.0 and 8.8 inch screen, semi digital instrument cluster). My question would be the can be the 8.8 display replaced by 10.25 without any other module swap? I know that the live cockpit professional is the one with 10.25 screen 7.0 op system, and full digital inst cluster.

I'd just look back in history and ask yourself when have bmw offered the latest tech as a retrofit to an older car?

Only thing I can recall as I had it was fitting Bluetooth phone connectivity to the e39.

Personally can't see bmw doing this at all

You will not be able to upgrade without purchasing a new vehicle. It's a completely different system both hardware and software.

I also want that just because of customization options in the cluster. Constant view of map and song info makes digital cluster usable other than that it has no advantage over analog one except changing colors according to driving mode selected especially if you have a HUD.

Question, why would you want to upgrade to iDrive 7, has finally been answered. Answer is "Android Auto".
Regarding displays and hardware - I am not sure, that it is different in 5 series with iDrive 7, than it was before. I have digital dash (without any plastic on it) and 10" control display. With connected drive most of the connectivity is also on board (integrated sim and wifi). There is no LCI yet, just G30/G31 with new software.

From what i see from the pictures (and remember from showroom), control display (center) is same size. Dashboard may be little different. It may be bit wider, but height is the same - there is no vertical space to increase it vertically.

I believe it is a 12.1 inch versus a 10.2 inch screen. And you probably need that screen real estate.

Not true. With the use of emulators and filters in the near future it will possible as both are on the same can system.

I measured the displays I have. Control display is around 10". 12" will not fit into same housing, so I think, I remeber correctly, that control display size has not changed.
Instrument cluster / dash (what ever is the correct term) - I measured it and it is 29x10,7cm (which is 11,4"x4,2"). If you are using rectangle for diagonal calculation, then you will get 12,1"-12,2", depending on how you round your results.

Regardless of the hardware, I don't believe that BMW will upgrade existing cars.

I don't know. Comfort and Adaptive are red, when headlights are on. Sport (all of them) is like on the pic.

I prefer the Alpina display in sport mode.

If you have done at least one full retrofit with coding and wireing you would know what I am talking about. So you go ahad and buy a brand new car instead
