HVAC system blowing warm air - 2020 M550

Now that the weather is hot here, I have noticed that the HVAC system in my 2020 M550 doesn't work very good at all. I have pressed 'menu' on the HVAC control panel and set it to the coldest setting on the slide-graph. When I start the car with the system set to 68 and on 'auto', (and the ambient temp in the 80's+) the car blows fairly warm air for about 15 mins until cold air start to come out. I even tried setting it on 63 all the time, and it still takes ~15 mins to get cold air to start flowing. I don't have this issue on the other cars in my garage (Porsche 911 C4S; Mercedes GLE; Toyota Rav4; VW Jetta). Does anyone else have this problem with the G30 (or an M550)?

My 18' is similar, AC couldn't cool the car down until I ceramic tinted the windows and use the sunshades. The "AC" seats are meager at best. I thought the blowers were broken and the dealer said that's normal operation.

BMW, like many other makers, have transitioned to a newish environmentally friendly refrigerant called 1234yf. Unfortunately it's less efficient than the former 134a.

That said, I live in FL where it's already hot as balls, and I'm finding the a/c to be sufficient (2019 540). Great? No. But sufficient.

You might want to take it in and let them check the system for faults.

Major problem with this car. 2017 540, read my thread from 2017. AC is terrible on this car.

AC works fine on my 2019 M550. I live in San Antonio. Nanoceramic tint, AC set to coolest setting in iDrive (since there is no longer the little wheel to turn on the dash), and all is well. And my car is black on black.

I am in rather hot Arizona. If the car is sitting in the sun for several hours I have to run the AC in max for about five minutes to properly cool down the car. Then I can go back to auto and it will maintain the comfort level.

But I don't let that happen. I have a 530e so if the car is going to be sitting for hours (such as when I am golfing), I use the phone app to turn on the ac about five minutes or so before I need to get in the car. That works perfectly.

I should add that being in Arizona, when I got the car I immediately had the windows tinted with a quality nano ceramic tint. If the car is going to be sitting in the sun for more than 15 minotes or so, I also put the sun shade up on the windshield.

Update on my original post. 1st trip to the dealer, they said the coolant needed to be topped-up as that has something to do with the AC in the G30. That didn't work. It still intermittently blows warm air even wen set on 60. On this 2nd trip to the dealer, the car has been in the shop 4 days now and still no solution. They 'hope' to have a solution next week.

I don’t have a problem with the AC in my car. I find that I will tweak the temp to 66 on warmer days more often then my older car (‘14 MB) but I think the AC is pretty reasonable. I am surprised you noted it blows warm air for a while.

On my car if I get in and it is crazy hot and I haven’t preconditioned (such as no hybrid charge or didn’t hit the button in the app) the AC system would seem to be off and only turn on a few minutes later blowing cold air. I smile almost every time this happens as in my last car I hated the hot air blast in those first couple of minutes as the AC got setup. I had thought BMW engineered that out since I get only cold air.

I don’t know if the system differs at all in the 530e, but my MY2020 has been very good. And I have had many days lately above 100F and crazy humid when getting into the car. Compared to my experience yours sound like there is a problem somewhere.

Many V8 BMW's as of late have been suffering from AC issues, however it seems there are two separate issues among those vehicles:

1) AC Blowing Cold Air Intermittently
2) AC Dying Completely

The problems have escalated as many X5,6,7's and 8-series vehicles with V8's have been affected by the issue, I wonder if OP's issue is similar to that of the other vehicles currently experiencing AC issues. I would check out the 8 and X5/X5M forums to see if the experience you are having is the same.

wow, I had no idea how systemic this problem was across other BMW V8 models. I haven't heard anyone use the words "class action"...yet

Its definitely becoming a big issue. One thread somewhere said that a dealer has at least 20 vehicles in line for the same issue. I'm surprised a stop sale hasn't been issued, no AC in the summer is not a pleasant experience.

Day 8 in the show on round 2 (round 1 was 5 days). They are replacing the condenser, compressor, and expansion valve. Let's see if this fixes the warm air issue

Wow, that's horrible, BMW really needs to do something further about this, not only is it a bad experience for new owners, as well as returning who just want to enjoy their cars, but the timing couldn't be any worse during summer. Best of luck OP.

AC compressor failure probably just like mine had when I took delivery last month of my 2020 M550i. Was blowing hot air and eventually completely failed. Part was replaced and now the AC works perfect and blows extremely cold air.

When I took delivery this problem was not big as I searched the forums but found no problems that the dealer tech told me I had (compressor needing full replacement as the part was not functioning anymore upon PDI) but during this past month I've seen numerous cases pop up on the forum throughout all the V8 platforms.

UPDATE: It "seems" my AC issue is resolved after replacement of the condenser, compressor, and expansion valve (all under warranty, of course). The warm air blowing issue has not surfaced at all since this work was done. I hope this lasts.

Did BMW stop testing vehicles before production? This shouldn't be happening on expensive models and should have extra attention with a new refrigerant.
