No more engine start/stop disable for 2021, WTF!
I have a 2018 and I'm used to simply disabling the engine start/stop function every time I start the car. So, since my lease is expiring in 3 months I went to test drive the 2021 today. I immediately noticed that the disable button is gone and there's just a blank plate. I initially thought this was great, it's back to the good ol days when we didn't have to deal with this. I get to the first light and the engine cuts off. I asked the salesperson how to kill it. He said there's no way to turn it off anymore, you just have to live with it. This is the first modern car I've driven or been where you can't disable the start/start. What a disaster.

Mild hybrids or plug in hybrids don't have the ASS button. My plug in didn't, because it didn't need it. Same with the mild hybrids. The M550 still has it, since the V8s didn't get the mild hybrid technology.

Thanks for clarifying. This new mild hybrid system on the 540 smooths things out a little bit but it's still very noticeable and abrupt, hate it.

In absence of ASS ON/OFF button, you can customize Sport Individual mode and set all of its categories into "Comfort". Next time you get in the car you just switch into that customized Sport Individual mode and engine wont shutoff anymore.
Its prolly something that can be coded too.

Also, moving the shift lever left to put the transmission in sport (which is how I usually drive) used to disable ASS. Does that still work with the 2021? If so, problem solved for me.

I've programmed my Sport Individual to be the same as comfort mode (apart from the steering, which I prefer slightly heavier), so if I want to enjoy driving a bit more, I change to this mode, or one of the actual Sport modes. Having said all this, I am slowly getting used to the ASS. The biggest annoyance to me is the delay accelerating out of a bend if I had been coasting, or the engine cutting out just as I was about to pull out onto a roundabout etc. No doubt its better for the environment, but it is so effective at shutting the engine off that it can be frustrating at times. |

As much as I want another 540 I may get a 530 so I can have the ASS button. I'm in LA traffic most of the time anyway so it's fine for my needs 99% of the time and the options list is exactly the same as a 540.

From what I can tell, once you’ve set it up, it’s exactly the same. |

Did anyone figure out how to code it so the car remembers the last setting?
I use the Sport Individual trick to keep it from activating the ASS, but I find it annoying to hit that button every time. It would be nice if the car defaults to the last setting. |

Thanks for rubbing it in!
LOL< just kidding. The 2021 540i's are different. The ASS button is missing, and the only way to shut it off, is to put it in Sport mode EVERY time you re-start the car Hopefully someone can give me instructions on coding out the start/stop completely, or at least to remember the last drive setting, so it will start the car on "Sport Individual" every time, unless I change it. |

You can code the car to start up in whatever mode you want. The easiest way is with Bimmercode. I had my 530e coded to start in Adaptive and now my 550 is Adaptive as well. It literally takes 5 minutes.
You should probably jump over to the coding forum as well. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about Bimmercode. If you're still apprehensive, pay one of the coders on the forum to remotely log in and do it for you, but that will require a windows laptop, EsysX and an Enet cable. Either way, my 550 has the ASS. It's not the smoothest start/stop as I had in the 530e electric, but it doesn't bother me all that much. It only comes into play when I'm at a light. Depending on your drive, if you're in heavy traffic, just hit the button to disable it. |

There is, however, a difference between the plug-in and the mild hybrid. On my 530e plug-in, when stopped the car reverts to the electric motor so if one does not activate auto hold or keep ones foot on the brake, the car will crawl forward. Just as cars have always done for 100 years. So even if one has been driving with the ICE, when stopped it reverts back to the electric motor.

The restart is very smooth though. If it turns out that this is something that I will not be able to disable on my future 2022 replacement (at lease end) and the Mercedes or Audi does a better job on it, then I may have to jump ship.

Just getting used to my 530d with MHT. I had a loaner recently and I'm sure the engine started (without touching anything) when the car in front moved. My MY21 doesn't seem to do this. Anyone whose car does auto start when cars in front move? I don't have the driver assistance pack.
