Hi all , my previous car 2018 m550i had adaptive lights which would turn with the steering, in the new car 2021 m550i , the headlights don't move , which is surprising . What has changed ?

Yeah, it seems now when you take a turn a side light turns on.

So funny you bring this up, I was just telling my son today that the headlights in my car (2021 M550) don’t turn when I turn the steering wheel which is really weird … all of my bmw’s have had this and our current ones do as well (my sons 2021 M340 and my daughters 2021 X3) so it’s not overall 2021 change on bmw’s.

Not sure why this has changed either !?!?

No one has found an explanation, but it has popped up since the LCI. For whatever reason the LCI lacks steering adaptive headlights on the G30. Perhaps it is due to the chip shortage. Hopefully so as it is a feature that many competing cars have, for valid reason, and should return to the 5.

I contacted my dealer and he said the ordering guide states adaptive lights and they should swivel and I should contact their service department. But it seems my car is not the only one as others have confirmed. Anyone else contacted their dealer to see if this is a problem with all LCI?

The LCI does not have swivel lights. Hence the cornering lights.

The Pre-LCI G30 had both swivel lights AND cornering lights…

So the lack of swivel lights isn’t supplanted by cornering lights. They work in conjunction with each other on my pre-LCI G30 and they work great together.

Yeah , my pre lci had both cornering and adaptive lights which would turn. Unless BMW changed the meaning of adaptive , something is not right with these latest lights.

Can more Lci owners confirm the lights don't turn ?

True, my 17MY 540i came with adaptive and cornering lights so they turn along with cornering lights

My LCI lights do not turn, just the cornering lights come on when wheel is turned.

So I spoke with my service advisor , he's telling me for 2021 to get the lights to swivel it must be laser headlights.

Odd statement since laser lights are not an option on the G30 in the US. Pre-LCI or LCI.

Still a loss since base headlights on the Pre-LCI had this functionality. It was what BMW used to mean by “Adaptive”.

Bottom line, whatever the new matrix tech BMW deployed in the LCI replacing mechanically swiveling lights, does not seem to be doing as good of a job as the pre LCI swiveling lights did.

This is obviously coming from a user (driver's) experience. Maybe in some laboratory testing environment the actual field of vision is equally as illuminated in both LCI and pre-LCI. However, the lights movement is imperceptible in LCI.

Did anyone ever figure this out, just drive my 2021 M550 and it definitely does not have the turning headlights like I mentioned earlier in this thread.

So what's the deal with this, as I'm now looking at an M550i and I understood adaptive lights the same way others did? Seems an odd omission.

I have non laser lights on my 2023 m550 and they do swivel
Note as per the pre LCI the light switch has to be in the auto position
They will not be adaptive in any other light switch position

The motor was removed with the LCI as BMW switched to a matrix system. Where the steering adaptive feature is emulated by dynamically turning on and off various LEDs in the matrix. But that feature was never enabled in the US on the forums. US dynamic headlight regulations differ from the rest of the world and I believe no BMW headlights on the G30 are approved for this feature in the US.

You are in the UK so that matrix system is enabled for you.

The lights on my 2018 did turn... until I had them coded to Euro spec. The swivel is gone, as are the little amber markers, but now I have the beam splitting feature.
