Stealing an E90

I'm not quite sure whether or not this should even be discussed in a public forum but since I do not have an alarm, I was wondering how easy it would be to A: open the doors and B: start the car without the key fob.

Let's put it this way. If I locked my keys in the car, could Officer Friendly open the car with his slim-jim thingy and if I left the doors unlocked and the windows down in a shady part of town, would it be there when I came back.

No details needed. Just a rough idea.

That's a good question, let's see who has a good answer to that.

opening the doors is a real challenge compared to most cars since the locks go inside the door when the car is locked, therefore making it hard (or impossible to lift them with any kind of tool), plus they are completely electric so, i dont think any tool could really help. They would have to bust ur window. And in my opinion it is impossible to start it without the key, since bmw has all sorts of algorithms and encriptions in the wireless key. Just move down south, where no one steals

I do care if it's stolen, because it would be a big inconvenience. The wait from Bremerhaven to the USA was long enough. I don't want to be without a car for another 2-3 months even if insurance does pay for it. Btw, I have GAP insurance too. I'd have to drive my Ford Exploder again.

I don't have any experience with the E90, but breaking into the E46 was as easy as jamming a flathead screwdriver into the lock cylinder and removing it. Shouldn't even set off the alarm. Slim-jimming is impossible, since the lock pin slides completely into the door and the button is mounted on the center console, but why bother when you can just crack the lock cylinder with simple hand tools? Most E46 owners in theft prone areas remove the door cylinder completely and replace with a keyhole cover.

Stealing the entire car is another matter. The car essentially needs to be flatbedded or towed to be taken quickly and easily.

I always hear about Toyota Camry's and Honda Civics being stolen. My 1984 Toyota Supra was stolen for its nice seats and wheels. The e90 has some very nice wheels and seats as well.

I wonder why the 3-series is not one of the more frequently stolen cars.

A slim jim works buy accessing the control arm of the lock inside the door accessed through the space between the window and the door. The only thing the lock pin (mechanism visible in the cabin) has to do with the process is the lock pin is attached to the control arm which is connected to the other mechanisms. If the control arm is accessible from the outside door window then the slim jim can open an e90. Very few cars have items blocking the control arm in the door that makes a slim jim useless.

In any case the ignition is electronically coded so using a slim jim to break into an e90 will not result in the theft of the car itself.

My boyfriend said that it's really hard to steal and that no one would bother stealing it anyways. It isn't a parts car or anything.

Forget the slim jim. Considering how weak our front windshields are, just get a small rock and break into it. There are ways to steal a car no matter what it is. Only way to prevent is having a security with a big bazooka by your car 24/7, 365 days.

Isn't that the Terminator-1984 security package? I heard that option costs a bundle.

If the a door is opened without disabling the alarm with the remote control, it WILL set off the alarm (on both my 2002 E46 and new E90 - we're talkng the alarm fitted as standard in the UK). Tha alarm is silenced by inserting the key in the ignition, by the chip in the key.

I had to use the key twice with my E46. Once when thr remote would not work due to a radio transmitter at a motorway service area. Other brands of car nearby were having the same problem. The alarm activated for the few seconds it took to open the door and slot in the key.

Once at my airfield, I was separated from my remote (1km away at the other end of the main runway). I used the emergency flat key in the door lock and transferred that to the ignition within a few seconds - again the alarm sounded for those few seconds. Doing this in the E90 is likely to take much longer as you have to find the emergency keyholder shell, insert the key into the holder and then insert that into the deshboard slot.
