Like most of the people have said on here, it has a lot to do with practice. I used a Canon 50mm f1.8 when I shot these. It was stupid bright outside so I had to play with my shutter speed and ISO in order to get the right amount of movement and not completely washout my photos.
Going to a track event really helps to practice because of the frequency of the cars going by. Since they'll basically be the same distance, you can really focus on your vehicle tracking. Here are some pics from Mitty that I took a few days ago.

Love that last one! The first two, the angle seems a little off but the last one is perfect. Maybe because it fills the frame nicely.
