It's interesting - just because it's measured, it's valued. Now that you can collect "appreciation" points, some people value it more when you click appreciate than if you write back a post empathetically thanking them for their help. .. And when someone SAYS thank you, you wonder why they didn't also click appreciate.

Yet, the appreciation points are utterly valueless - they don't entitle you to free merchandise, extra exposure etc. They are nothing more than a social indicator.

But the point is that they are _supposed_ to be an indication of how valuable people find your posts. Some people might look at the ratio (that guy is helpful about 60% of the time) others might look at quantity (that guy has helped 300 people) - so outright ASKING people to give you points is a manipulation of the system.

Feel free to call me a troll - (unfortunately 1addicts doesn't have a 'troll' button yet - it'd be interesting to see if people collected those points too) -
but I think it is fair to ridicule because it's an overt attempt to manipulate the system - and a pointless system at that - it's not like you're asking people to give you something you can then benefit from - it's just asking people to artificially boost your social standing.

... in many ways it's akin to re-badging your 128i as a 135i or publishing 0-100 times and virtual dyno graphs that you measured going down a steep hill.

All that said, we all come on here voluntarily, and it's a bit bloody rough to turn around and hate on a guy who's just come here to say how much he's enjoying the community. So there's no need to be an arsehole about it - if you're going to be negative, ridicule the behaviour, not the individual.

400 posts is like a day to some people lol.

Our milestones used to be 7000 posts. 400 can't be a milestone??

Since my journey began on acquiring an ///M, long before becoming a member of Bimmerpost, I had learned much from online articles, dealerships, friends, BMW and Non BMW car enthusiasts; but recently (2014 - Date I Joined Bimmerpost) most of my learning of my F80 LCI M3 has come from Bimmerpost members, both the ones with good intentions and from inadvertent and purposeful trolls. I really do enjoy coming to this website to learn more about my car, what others have learned, the *How to’s of the car*, and the ever entertaining *what in the “F” did they do that for’s*. I certainly have posted: dribble (see this post), trolling-esque observations and every once in a great while, I have written posts, which brought out discussion and appreciations.

I love my F80 M3 LCI and I appreciate this web site along with its members. Some day when I grow up: I want to have enough appreciations, which are greater than 3 Standard Deviations, and in the top 1-5% of the web site user community. Maybe being a meaningful contributor here on Bimmerpost will come in time for me, (I am well aware this post will fall to the top of the bottom in short order), until then I will settle for my current average appreciation per post (AAPP) = .6025. With the impending Smart Phone purchase, (could be an iPhone 8/Pro), Perhaps I will get closer to the goal, but must admit I would be elated with an AAPP = 1.0. Kind of reminds me of an earned management value system, might even be a good quality metric to go along with the deviation comparison of the entire community.

Drive well everyone and thank you for your contributions.
Here's a little secret if you really care about driving your "AAPP" (I'm laughing) up. Only post in OT. Then your posts don't count, but you may get appreciated.

I'm far from being the helpful SOB that my number of appreciates to post count would indicate using your methodology...trust me, and if not, just ask anyone on here that knows me.

Now that's how you game the system! Great advice.

... That also explains why OP's proud "400th post" thread shows that it's only his 399th post.

I thought everybody was being very polite about OP's numeracy.

Shit man, on another topic, 1,000 appreciates from only 399 posts. That AAP is is off the charts! OP is aiming for 1.0, you're up around 2.5 by my calcs.

OP, you'll need to aim higher.

If the appreciation ratio is to be trusted, we all need go no further than Joekerr for sage advice

This was my exact thought. Participation trophies, IG followers, Tweet reposts and now Appreciation determining how we do things, what we do, and the content/context in which we post.

Oh my.

Still loving my car, and over five years later it is still putting a smile on my face.. So F'n hilarious to see this post received it's 10,000th view and I earned two points. 7 years later and I'm still heading to be somebody on Bimmerpost!!! Should have an appreciation score of over 1000 in 2025 by my numeracy and I have almost attained a full 1.0..... Laugh

I hope all are well, and you have not been traumatized by the front grill of the G8x.

Nobody tell OP 1:1 was guaranteed if you posted often in the politics forum.

Definitely don’t tell him it’s no longer on the forums.
