Typical cost / time to unlock a locked G31 ECU

Just trying to do a bit of a process check here.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I'd read that getting a locked ECU unlocked was a 2-3 week process and cost something like $1,500? Or am I way off?

Asking because I was quoted something quite different from a tuning shop. Just trying to figure out what's what?

Do they realize you have a 2022?

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We do not accept DMEs that have a production date of 6/2020 or later, as they cannot be unlocked. The DME production date and vehicle chassis production dates are not the same. Please verify your DME date before sending it in.

Because it is no way related to the OP's post.

I assume he was trying to reply to something or someone else as it's not related to OP.

He totally answered the question.

He's telling him the DME can't be unlocked so the question is moot.

He didn't answer the question. That's why I thought he was trying to reply to another post.

Also the DME can be unlocked, which again is why I thought he was replying to someone else.

What I've bolded is correct.

The tuning shop you got quoted by likely doesn't realize your ECU / ECM is locked.

I guess the way the post reads, it can go either way.

The $1500 and 2 to 3 weeks is about right to have the ECU removed and shipped out to be unlocked.

The last paragraph, he states that the information from his tuner is quite different. So either you are correct and he was quoted something much cheaper because they think they can do a bench unlock at their shop or he's saying he was quoted something considerably higher which means the tuning shop wants more profit to ship out for ECU unlock.

So if he was quoted much less than 1500, you're correct they don't realize he is an LCI. If it's considerably more than $1500, it's to get his ECU shipped out unlocked and they just want more profit than what he's expecting.

Either way I apologize, you were just trying to help the OP.

For reference, the NY based tuner quoted me $4,000 and 4 weeks.

That sounded pretty out of whack to me.

CLARIFICATION: upon further email exchange, the $4,000 covers unlocking AND tuning . . .so call it $2,500 for a tune.

Definitely less of a price gouge after that clarification.

Did that include a second cloned ecu? Or just unlock?

Unlock only.

I took it to mean: "F*ck off, we're not interested in your business." type of quote.

Which is a shame, but hey, that's their right. They can quote however they'd like to whomever they'd like. It's their business.

And no, I'm not going to share their name. I didn't come here to trash any specific tuner. I'll just keep looking and will take my business elsewhere.
