I rock a slingshot 200 but it sounds like the 100 might be the size you are looking for.
very comfortable and the best part is you can get to the camera without taking it off. check it out. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BAX50G |

+2 on the slingshot. 100 might be the perfect choice for a d40.

+1 on the Kata, if youre looking for a relatively small bag that holds 2-3 lenses and a flash, its fantastic
the Prism U is the smaller one, the Sensitivity V is slightly larger, but not large both about 85-90 dollars and padded/waterproof

Which one did you get? They have 3 Shootout sizes: S, M and L. The L is a BEAST (I saw it down at Glazer's.) They didn't have a Medium in stock, as I wanted to try my laptops out to see if they fit. The opening for the laptop slot on the Small looked like it would only fit a micro-laptop!

i looked at both the kata 3n1 and the sling shot 300. i carry a canon 40D, 17-55 f/2.8 IS and a 70-200 f/2.8L IS both with lens hoods and speedlite flash with me. both were "ok".
i ended up getting the fastpack 350. a bit big, but i can carry my lap lop with me easily if i need it. also for longer day trips, i can put lunch in there as tons of other shit. for shorter walks, the side opens like the slingshot, you just have to take out your right arm. at first i thought it would be a PITA. after 2 weeks in thailand, i realized it was no problem at all. heres a link to it. fastpack 350/
