Fuel Reserve Warning Light

I have a a 2020 M550. I get a fuel warning sound at 50 miles to empty, but no yellow warning light. Is this normal? When is the warning light supposed to come on?

Thanks!

Donīt think there is a light - havenīt seen one in mine either. (2018 520D with 6WB). Same goes for my F20 118d.

I have forgotten how the lights look, but I do remember that there are two different warnings that you get.

1. You get a tone, cluster, and HUD message to let you know you're low on fuel. This one happens at 50 miles or so. The car will let you know that you should refuel soon.

2. You get a critically low fuel message. I feel this is at 25 miles left or so. The car will then let you know with a red warning and let you know that power is reduced and advise you not to attempt passing. It also strongly suggests you refuel as "damage to property" is possible (basically BMW speak for you can end up in a crash from a stall.

I know this as I got lucky on a road trip from VA back to PA that passed through rural DE where I guess not all gas stations are 24 hours like in the major cities. As a result, I got to the gas station limping along on regenerative braking and 1 mile of range left. I filled up 12 gallons in the 12.1 gallon tank. Were it not for regenerative braking for the last mile to the 24/h Wawa I would have been waiting for a gas delivery at 3AM in rural DE.

I wouldn't recommend living as close to the razor's edge as I did!

But! I did learn that the car's range calculation is pretty damn accurate...

There is also an "!" under the clock, and a notification in the notification centre.

OK, I tested the low fuel warning. Second warning at 30 miles to empty, an auditable alert plus a yellow light warning indicator.
