I need to make sure I test drive a 540i with the sport plus transmission and 275 rear tyres to see full potential?
I've never had a turbo car that didn't have a little bit of lag. In sport plus mode, I find it just about non-existent, but yes it does happen in sport on occasion, and will definitely happen in comfort if you gun it.

Their reviews usually make me roll my eyes into the back of my head, but their acceleration numbers are usually the best, which to me equates to the most reliable.

I can't seem to find any 540s with sport+ for the transmission, only sport..

Perhaps. Autotop is a good source for performance cars, however, and they made quite a big deal about their accelleration findings between the two.

Worth noting is that C&D reviews for the 540 in no way resemble the reviews of the top Euro mags (which I usually trust as they tend to focus more on handling and performance). US cars are usually softer, so maybe that is the issue, but something never really jives for me about many of their BMW reviews over the past few years.

You need to check the options list. Options list code is 2TB.

Here it cost a few hundred euros extra over the std. box. Not all cars have it, and, IIRC, models below the 530 don't get it as an option either.

Perhaps US cars have it std., but judging by that video, it does not appear so.

My 2019 has Sport+, part of the M-Sport option. Since the transmissions are mechanically identical, 2TB can be VO coded. One has to remove the "standard" option (I don't remember the code as it's been a while) and replace it with 2TB. I did it on my 2012 535i with ESys.
