Howdy. Does anyone have a theory about this? I discovered a bunch of what appear to be scratches on the passenger side of my windshield. I ran a razor blade over both the inside and outside but I detected no drag. I can't tell whether these are really scratches, or maybe deposits of some kind. Thoughts?

Probably a ring with a diamond or cut stone, a key won’t do that. Have seen this happen at a valet who didn’t remove jewellery when washing or had a piece of ceramic caught in a cloth. Or you parked in someone’s spot and they did it deliberately.

J/K - looks totally deliberate. Check with ex girlfriends. Better the windshield than the paint.

I don't know about a razor blade, but if they are scratches you should be able to tell by just running your fingernail over them. If you can't feel anything, then I would see if they would come off with washing or maybe with some solvent, like Goof Off. Lastly maybe something with a fine abrasive in it like regular car polish or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. If they don't come off and you can't feel them then I am stumped. Maybe talk with a glass installer. Good luck with fixing it!--Bob

Thanks for all the funny replies.
I really can't feel anything via fingernail. I tried rubbing one patch of "scratches" with vinegar on a paper towel, and most of them seemed to come off. The bigger group, closer to the middle of the windshield, doesn't seem to be budging much. I'm likely to order Griot's glass clay and see if it helps.
As for the "critter" theory, we have pet chickens and I wonder if maybe one of them flew up there and panicked when there was nothing to grab onto. If that's what happened, I wish I'd caught it on video.
As for parking in Europe, I know about that firsthand. I parked my Euro delivery 540/6 overnight in Orvieto in 1997. Next morning, I found a huge dent in one of the C pillars. Looked like somebody hit it hard with a pipe. I'll never try that again!

Try a magic eraser. If most came out, it’s probably surface scuffs from something, even intentional.

That sure does look like intentional damage to lamination of the windshield/glass. Certainly seems to be done by hand as opposed to an automatic machine (car wash, buffer).
Not sure that can be fixed. Call an automotive windshield replacement company and get their opinion and options to fix.

Driving into the direction of the sun at just the right angle may highlight every scratch.

If you think it’s not scratched then try maguires plastx. It’s for polishing headlights, super fine abrasive. I have used it to remove deposits on a windscreen before leaves no marks at all yet can remove oxidation.

Laughing here at the thought of a chicken freaking out due no reaction😂

Hopefully that’s all it was.

Thank you all for the humor and suggestions. I tried the magic eraser and it did some good. This morning, I used the suggested plastx and that was great... now, there's virtually no sign anything ever happened. Best of all, I get to keep my original, Dingolfing-installed windshield!

I'll never know what really happened, but I am going with the chicken theory!

Nice! You are a good sport for putting up with all of our sarcasm! Glad the magic eraser took the edge off and Plastix is such a great product. I use it on the Piano Black interior trim to remove micro scratches too.
