Vehicle key battery discharged

I'm getting the warning Vehicle key battery discharged and replaced the battery. Afterwards I still get the error for 30 seconds, then it disappears, anyone has had similar issues?

Yep, common, need to use quality fresh batteries. Energizer or Duracell that haven't been on the shelf forever. The FOB and car is very sensitive to quality batteries. Amazon specials won't cut it.

I had to replace my fob battery recently, firstly I just swapped over the battery from the spare but still got the warning so bought a couple of Duracells & it’s fine now.

Ditto what Joe & Chapper said. I had that issue so I put the remote battery on a tester. It showed about 3/4 "good." Apparently, not good enough for BMW as a new battery cued the warning.

I think the fobs are rather cheap, TBH. Had the problem twice. I use Vartas (OEM supplier) and it still happens.

I just use it until it dies fully and keep a few spares in the glove box.

In my previous Merc, I had the car for 9 years and never needed to change the battery once.

Nah it just tells me I have no battery, then 10 seconds in the car figures out I actually have battery and removes the warning...

My car says "battery empty" which is an odd message for BMW to program, especially since it's not "empty", lol.

Do you have two remotes? If yes, did you change the battery in that one? If not, have you tried using it or swapping the battery from that remote to see if the warning stops?

If you have a 2nd remote and its battery was as old as the battery in the remote you use regularly…if the 2nd remote is close enough to the vehicle…the aerials may be picking up that the battery in the 2nd remote has dropped to the level that the warning appears.

Check your 2nd remote if you have one.

Great advice. Thanks. So i swapped using remotes from much used to little used and found that the warning still recurred. I've also removed the new battery and discharged the capacitors in the fob. Probably not been careful enough to ensure both fobs are not present at the same time so that's another area of testing to perform.

Have cleared the error code with Bimmerlink. It returns.

Do you buy into the dodgy 12v battery theory that some have posted about?

Since January I've had this message on the Instrument Cluster of a 2017 G30. Thinking this was the fob battery I checked out the CR 2032

Varta 2.94V Error message so replaced 7/1/24 with
Maxwell 3.18V Error message so replaced 9/1/24 with
Panasonic 3.32V Error message so replaced 13/1/24 when reading 3.05V with
Varta 3.27V Error message so replaced 2/2/24 when reading 3.07V with
Duracell 3.3V Error message 4/2/24 when reading 3.23

Now thinking that this is not the battery fob so swapped the fob for the second one. This gave the same error message

Checked out Bimmerlink apart from the loads of error messages this one seemd relevant held in the error memory of the Body Domain Controller:
804415 ID transmitter (IDG)Battery under voltage.

This can be cleared in Bimmerlink but as soon as the vehicle is unlocked the error returns.

Both fobs continue to work without error except fro the annoying bong which clears after a few seconds.

There's been some discussion https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...tage%20battery on X5 forum but no conclusion

There's another YouTube

which demonstrates that you need a new 12v Vehicle Battery. However the comments say that it wasn't that.

Anyone have any insights? Would value observations and comments

I mean if it's a 12V battery then that's pretty bad, but understandable, since my car was in a storage for a few months

Have had a 12v battery test now which says the battery is ok and to recharge it. Well it was fully recharged overnight so i think it's fair to say it's on the blink. Also cca was 750 instead of 900. So bought a new one.

Will fit it Saturday and report n back.

On the way to the testing station, i was locked out. No fob activity at all with either fob. Had to use the key and cowling method to get in and start.

Replaced the 12v battery and all keys are back to normal. The reading is now 93% rather than 83% on the old battery. These vehicles are indeed sensitive to loss of current before the vehicle won't start.

When I replaced my battery I tested the old one and it was still good but evidently not good enough for what it needs to do. A new battery fixed it all.
