Windshield Warranty/Coating

Has anyone gotten a windshield coating from "Owner's Pride"? It comes with a 5-year windshield replacement warranty. Any road debris-related cracks or chips in the windshield are covered. $500 contract with 5k max value over 5 years. A few installers are offering this in my area.

A glass hardener is used which also creates a hydrophobic layer so water beads off during rainfall. Although the coating is probably worthless and won't last long, the warranty seems valuable. Thoughts?

Reads like garbage to me.

1. They limit the total payments on the warranty to $5K over 5Y.
2. They will repair the damage to the windshield and only replace the windshield if it can’t be repaired. Since pretty much every insurance company will repair cracked and chipped windshields for free via safe lite without a premium hit or deductible. This seems weak.
3. The warranty won’t even cover the coating unless you use the “maintenance kit”. Sounds like you’ll need to reapply it. Like the mouthwash that advertises 24 hour fresh breath when used every 12 hours (so basically 12 hour protection lol).

You can coat your windshield with wax or a coating for pennies. Let your comprehensive coverage protect the windshield. Use the savings to pad your back account

I take it you don’t live in a state where glass is fully covered by insurance? MA has this.

I’m with Apex. Snake oil.

Yes, comprehensive coverage covers glass with a $500 deductible.

I’ve had several hail claims across multiple cars over the years and my premium has been increasing. The most recent (no other claims besides hail in past 10yrs) was a windshield only claim and my premium still went up.

Figured $500 for this warranty would pay for itself without a premium increase in the event of replacement.

I can't help but think you're planning to put money into the wrong place hoping for a refuge. There are simpler paths for that IMHO.

For starters, I'd unpack why your premiums are increasing and not just make the uninformed "claim = premium increase". That's how poor decisions are made.

For basic starters, the premium you pay out of pocket is basically the following formula:

P = B + S - D

P = Premium (Out of pocket)
B = Base rate for your rate pool
D = Discounts provided by your insurer
S = Surcharges added by your insurer to account for your increased risk

If your insurer raises base rates that affects everyone insured by the insurer. These rates are filed with the state insurance regulator so they are uniform across risk populations. The insurer can offer discounts too and that lowers your out of pocket costs. Surcharges are added to account for your increased risk. Insurers have to clearly spell out when, for how long, and by how much will they levy surcharges for claims in your policy. Usually those are only for things you can control (DUI, at fault crashes, moving violations, etc). Obviously, if any of these change (such as a base rate increase or a discount loss) you can end up paying more out of pocket and feel an "increase".

Your insurer may have removed a discount for your hail damage (such as a "claims free" discount or something similar). That's not the same as a rate increase IMHO, but it is one in raw out of pocket terms.

Best course of action is always the same. Shop around for insurance at renewal time and switch if the rate at another insurer is meaningfully better. Another insurer won't care that you lost a discount at your previous insurer. They would care about surchargable incidents though.

Lastly, yes insurers will charge your comprehensive deductible in most states for a windshield replacement (except FL which I think might be the only state that mandates windshield coverage). In some states, like NY, you can opt for full windshield coverage that bypasses your comprehensive deductible. That said, all that I'm aware of will cover chips and cracks for free via SafeLite. That greatly weakens the value of this plan since it only offers "value" for a full windshield replacement. It doesn't mandate OEM glass or dealership install either.

Insurance doesn’t mandate an OEM glass replacement either. I asked for this on my MDX and I was given a Safelite equivalent. As mentioned, glass is covered with comp in TX.

Not sure how I’m “uninformed”. Your lengthy response literally confirmed that because of my claim, my “risk” increased, thus increasing my premium. Further, my agent confirmed that the dollar amount of the hail claims (4 of them now, no other type of claims in 10yrs) are the reason for the increase in premiums. The 4th being a glass only claim right before renewal. It’s clear the number of claims are increasing my premium.

Looking for opinions, not a lecture sir.

This is correct, but varies by state. In MA, insurance will pay 100%, but will only pay for "aftermarket" glass which in most cases is the same glass as OEM made by the same manufacturer. Used to be Pinkerton without the BMW stamp.

Most insurance companies will let you pay the difference if you want BMW stamped glass. Usually double the price, so you would pay half.

Fair point on the lecture. I can have an abundance of information at times.

Yes, insurance usually doesn’t cover OEM unless you get an OEM parts rider. They usually aren’t very expensive (<$100/y).

Thankfully, I don’t have anymore to share on the topic.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. These things don't work. I am saying this because I was using some other products, saying similar things, but that didn't actually work and when the crack happened I had to pay for it to be replaced at that time. I was out of money and at that time I decided to borrow some money for instant repair, And then I get a loan and was provided immediate relief. For freelance professionals seeking a dependable financial tool, this app is a must-have.
