I've owned two 5 Series diesels: 2016 F10 and 2018 G30. No significant problems with either. Both had the same EGR issues and the one in the G30 was recently replaced on warranty. Each did well with fuel consumption, but the G30 seems just a little better. A mix of highway and city driving yields about 37 mpg and with straight highway travel one can make it into the low 40's. As you know, the low-end torque is amazing and at 70 mph, it is very rare for the car downshift no matter the grade.
The 3.0 liter diesel makes the G30 a fantastic car for travel. The range with a full tank is well over 500 miles. We took an extended trip from PA to Calgary, Banff (Canada) and south to California, Utah and Arizona. Unlike the East, diesel never posed a problem in the West. Even the most remote stations had diesel pumps (probably due to the abundance of diesel pickups in the region). My F10 had a few more options than the G30, but to me it's important to have the multi-position seats, Harmon Kardon sound system and Heads Up Display. On the other hand, I see no reason to deck out a diesel sedan with M-sport stuff especially things like 20" wheels and various scoops and wings. Based on experience with the 540d, I would suggest you jump on the one described. As I noted from your existing cars, you are familiar with diesels and also know that 2018 was the last year for BMW to offer them in the US. The biggest difference between your 2010 and later diesels is the addition of a DEF tank. While I do not know the exact capacity, a two-gallon container (from Walmart) will more than fill it. Good luck. |

Thanks for your insight TEF. My 335d is tuned and deleted and the performance is frankly, astonishing. 385 HP, 620 lb. ft. of torque and 40 MPG on the highway and 35 in town. The M550i would be left stock.
If I can get it at a good price, I will. |
