2018 530i MPG LOW? WHY?
I Have a 2018 530i sport edition (not m) just sport line and its 4 cly but mpg wise doesn't look like it . I drive 90% city and I'm getting 17-18mpg in the meter when I check. I don't brake aggressive nor do I floor it all day...... its it supposed to be in MID 20S? I just went and got oil changed maybe had something to do with it. and I'm using 93 gas and it has only 8500 miles...... what could be the issue?

Once I could get a low as 7.0 lt/100 km but it did happen once on 25 kilometers of mixed driving . On the same distance I used nothing but Sport Mode and fuel trip computer registered more than 8 liters .
I think the best compromise is that I use pedal shifters behind the steering wheel and leave the driving mode in Comfort . When I climb up the slopes I pull the "-" more than 3 times to shift down the car and without increasing the throttle input I can crest the road easily . Otherwise putting the sport mode and increasing the gas input definitely not throw a good recipe for fuel mileage concerns

I would still double check on a full tank and also see how the mileage is on a highway trip. I see big swings from city to highway, up to 36 MPG on a drive across Alligator Alley. |

I dont drive in sport.... and yes I reset meter...... through the signal stick next to dash.... regardless when I fillip I put 93 fuel and it reads anywhere from 440-420 miles per fillip tank. but eventually its decreases through out the week of driving. highway it increases but I don't do too many highway to know true mpg..... its sad because its been in shop and I told them and they said there isn't anything that could be wrong with it.... very ockward why I get low mpg in a 4 cyl .
another thing is... it'll take a while for the mpg to adjust unless u reset before u go highway to calculate the highway mpg only.... but regardless if u don't reset it'll go up 1-1.5 mpg on 20 min highway trip probably I personally thought I would get 22-25 mpg city atleast but I guess I'm wrong |

I think then that is expected mpg
In my city driving, my average speed is 35 to 37 mph, hence I get about 25 mpg in a 540i, on HWY it goes up to 32 mpg

Because no matter how gingerly you touch the gas, you are still accelerating a nearly 2-ton mass over and over in traffic and likely spending a significant amount of time idling with the a/c on registering 0 MPG. Try a/c off and windows down. Stop/start will keep the engine off more in traffic standstills, at least when this is bearable for Florida's cooler months.

I'm a mileage guy and I find that its best when the climate outside is moderate, so the A/C or heater doesn't have to work too hard. The difference can be 1-2 mpg. it seems.
The tires are 3 PSI above what is on the label in the door. Good alignment etc. I don't like to use the brakes so I anticipate when this happens and adjust my speed a bit. This from my days driving a Suburban (the older ones had lousy brakes) and a class C motorhome (was too heavy for its tires BTW). One reason I like diesels is the low end torque which lets me keep the revs low and prevent "hunting" of the gears. I don't participate in the "stoplight grand prix" but my diesels somehow manage to out-accelerate a lot of cars. Changing from comfort to eco-plus to sport doesn't seem to change my mpg's. My wife usually beats me by 2-3 mpg with her steady foot. Hyper-milers probably keep the acceleration steady up or down hills. I'm of the impression that diesel is in high demand, especially on the international market as ULSD, so gasoline is a mandatory side product. Oil refiners probably dump the gasoline on the open market making diesel more expensive. Burning the gasoline seems like not such a big deal since it is a waste-product of gasoline. Premium has all sorts of molecules that increase octane, which are removed when regular is produced, if I remember correctly. So drive it like you stole it and enjoy. PL |

I can't help to mention that my life to date on 530e is 41.2. I have a 100 mile round trip commute and charge in both directions and average 51 mpg on my commute. It's just as fast 0-60 as the 530i and when you step on it the electric and the gas engine work together beautifully. I've driven it in sport mode for a week with no charging and I averaged between 23-30 mpg. It's also the same price as the 530i, except that I got a $4,700 federal tax credit and so it actually was that much cheaper. It's a no brainer in my opinion compared to the 530i, except my guess is that the body roll is likely better in 530i, because it's 500 pounds lighter. Also Trump took the federal tax credit away for 2018 I believe. Having said that I'd like to try the 540i next.

I checked out fuelecononmy.gov and it has 24 city for the 530i. I am pretty sure their drive cycle, even in the city mode is not completely stop and go. From the wikipedia site, it says the average speed in the city drive cycle is 21.2mph, so depending on your traffic situation, it could be worse than this. If your commute is not to long, maybe switch over to a 530e. Do your commute on electricity. :-)

If you have gotten a 530e, you will be doing no lower than 31 mpg and as high as 50+ mpg.
