I live in an always warm climate myself. Would you be able to share more about what you did to avoid any warning lights on removal of these shutters?

I've seen some pics of vehicles with those support bars behind the grills painted or perhaps vinyl wrapped in a contrast color. Looks good.

I just leave the motor inside it and leave it plugged in.

Lead service tech at my dealer strongly advised me not to mess with it. The flaps are open in 95% of driving conditions, anyway.

I have not looked at the mechanism closely. Does your removal process destroy anything to get the motor separated or can this be put back to stock easily?

This seems like a good mod that warm climate drivers might want to do when the car is beyond the warranty period especially since these shutters have been a reported failure item.

No need to destroy them.
All comes apart easily once you have the bumper removed.

How do you know?

Stupid question here: when driving, how do you guys know when, and how much, these shutters are open or closed?

So, do the shutters always open when the car gets up to operating temp?

Cheers - I just bought 2017 G30 520d and noticed the same problem. I took the car from dealer with closed grill and since the next day the grill was always open. Not closing when parked, warming up, never. I do not have any warnings in my iDrive system.

Does anybody found out how the grill should actually work? What is the normal behavior? Can anybody observe the opening/closing of the grill after parked?

Kind of grinds my gears.
Thank you.

if it doesn't close after leaving the car and you come back and it's still open the car will and should throw a CEL

When your flaps went bad what error codes did it throw ? I have some
4 Error codes for
Active grill flaps
13820a
138204
13820b
138203
And then another 3 error code
CDA73A
CDA711
CDA737

The flaps seem to be working they open and close so I don’t know lol.
I hope these are all related lastly I have my car tuned. Didn’t know if dealer has to re program my ECU or mess with the tune file I. Order to have this fixed.

I didn't looked at the codes, so I have no idea. All I know is that there is a bulletin about the active grills being covered for free even if you are out of warranty.

What do you mean by CEL? I do not have any warnings in iDrive. It seems that flaps are not closing at all. Thank you

Unfortunately, no.
It is as simple as taking the bumper off and take those apart.

Grill malfunction?

I have a BMW 530e 2018, i was wondering if you get a warning light or message if the active grill is malfunctioning. I have only driven 20.000km with the car but i sometimes feel like it smells a little "burnt" when i smell close to the grill which i never have seen open. And at times if i drive hard i don't know if it's my imagination but i have felt that i have smelled a little "burnt" inside the car. When i have made fast accelerations and driven like 180 for awhile.

Could this be that it's malfunctioning, shouldn't i have seen it open at some point?
