G30 Heated Steering Wheel Retrofit?

Hi all! Just curious if any forum members have tried to retrofit a heated steering wheel to their G30. My new-to-me 2018 540i M-Sport has every feature I want EXCEPT the heated wheel. I’ve searched a bit and find that some of our F30 mates have done this, but am wondering if it’s doable on the G30?

As one of the people who did it on the F30, yes, it would most definitely be doable on the G30, and most likely easier as all of the wiring should be in place and the button for it is on the steering wheel instead of the steering column housing.

Biggest question I think to ask is, does your car now already have the features like Lane Departure or Blind Spot where the steering wheel vibrates? If so, then you already have the right wiring in place. You would just need to find the heated wheel that also has the vibration motor, then swap them, then just code the car with option 248 for the heated steering wheel.

Bumping this thread. I am taking delivery of a CPO soon, and indeed it has everything that I want except the heated steering. In talk with a seller on ebay about a used wheel as well. I will try to post update here. Or if anybody has any suggestions, please feel free.

I am a noob at coding GXX. Currently drive an F30, which I ordered with all options I wanted, but a long time ago I had a CPO E60 which I heavily retrofitted, paddle shifter+heated steering, folding mirror, auto dim interior and exterior mirror. Have a lot of experience with INPA and NCSExpert. However, no idea about ESys. So, learning ESys and the and all about launcher.

I have full option G30 wheel for sale, including heating, vibration, and touch for autonomous driving. It is the full wheel minus Airbag but you can use yours

Thanks

Heated steering wheel retrofit

I am part way through an attempt at retrofit on my G31.

Step 1
Bought a new steering wheel (standard, not the M sport version) wand then had it coded with option 248. From the NBT I can see that the heated wheel can be activated below a certain temperature. However, the light on the button doesn't turn on and the wheel doesn't get hot. The wheel still didn't work, and the guy who coded it showed that there was a error saying incorrect switch cluster.

Step 2
Bought a new switch cluster. I could see that there were no pins in the socket that the heated steering wheel plugged into. The new one has those pins. After installing it still doesn't work!

Step 3
Trying to check fuses, but literally no idea how to read the fuse board. My thinking is there isn't a fuse for it.

Any help appreciated, otherwise I have it booked in at a local BMW specialist on Friday to get it looked at.

Really interested in this. I was told by parts you would also need a new
harness through the steering wheel. Guess not.

On Exx and Fxx chassis cars, you needed a new clockspring which allowed power to the heated wheel. You also needed to run 12V and ground to the new clockspring. I don't know if that is all included in the G body cars now or not.

I would look up clocksprings on realoem and determine if there is a clockspring for option 248 (I believe 248 is for steering wheel heat).

If there's a seperate clockspring for option 248, you'll need to order a new clockspring too. It's easy to install - running the wiring is more of a pain than anything else.

If not, then the G is already pre-wired for a heated wheel which is great, you just need to code it into the vehicle order.

hey, any update on this?
I'm looking to get a heated steering wheel but I'm afraid it won't work.

edit: have looked up clocksprings, https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...54#61317944086 - don't think clockspring is needed.

shabadar123, I understand that "switch cluster" means clockspring, the thing that I talked above.

My guess, after reading https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1546938 is that we need a new control unit. To be more exact, piece #2 from here https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=61_4862 with the options that your car has.

I just finalize my heated steering wheel retrofit for my G31. Finally I got it work

What you need:

- New steering wheel with heating button, including "electronic steering wheel module", which is little box inside steering wheel (see TIS: ControlUnit A69). This little box controls heating and (optional) vibration function.

- New steering column switch cluster, (TIS: ControlUnit A83) (Suitable part numbers: 61317944073 or 61317944074) which have added pins for heating on connector "A83_4B".
If your switch cluster is "61317944072" from factory, it wont work with heating....
Check this picture and part number table (part number 1).

I picked my second hand steering switch cluster from eBay with nice price 60€.
Note: In case of G30/G31 switch cluster is not any kind of control unit (like in case F10/F11). It`s only BCM slave... some kind of "routing matrix" without brain... And not big job to swap with new one.

- Behind steering wheel/switch-cluster wiring is factory made 100% "retrofit ready". But important note! There is one missing fuse+missing power-wire behind fuse box: (TIS: Fuse Box "Z44")

If steering wheel heating "option 248" is fitted from factory, there is Red/Grey-coloured power-wire between Fusebox Fuse 57 to connector "X434*1B_pin_1".

...But without factory heating option this wireline above is non-wired. This is propably main reason for problems for all who had tried to get this retrofit working... I think so.
For me it took couple of hours to find this damned missing line to X424*1B -connector before get this finally working. So you must wire that missing line behind fuse box from F57 to "X434*1B" (pin1), and just after that your steering wheel electronic module (TIS: A69) will be powered!

For some nice reason power-wire from "X434*1B" to steering switch cluster is pre-wired from factory (Wire is Green/Blue-coloured). Which is nice of course.

Here is folder including pics above. I hope this will help somebody.
G30/G31 Steering wheel heating retrofit pictures

And after all.... then coding. Update option 248 to VO and recode BCM, HU-UNIT and KOMBI.

btw. If you are installing shift paddle version of steering wheel, remember to route one missing shift paddle signal cable from steering column cluster to BCM. Otherwise shift paddles wont work after coding. >>> Check this folder

One question. The wire that I need to take from the Z44 fusebox, fuse #57 that's in the glovebox and plug into PIN1 of X434*1B....
where at fuse #57 do I need to tap into, as I guess the fuse has 2 pins?

Do you get steering wheel enabled messages on the instrument cluster, and do you have auto turn on below x temperature in iDrive with 248 coded into BDC, HU, KOMBI? Will buy an E-SYS ethernet cable (only have ISTA USB-to-COM one), and with the help of e-sys explanatory video and short g30 esys video think I have the coding part sorted out as well.

Z44 fusebox is under/beside glovebox. No need to remove glove box at all. You just need to remove black cover under glove box. Open two "finger screws" and cover removes very easily. Then you can find Z44 fusebox unit on right side, just front of BCM. Check this picture (RHD-version..., but same idea).

Access to fuse 57 (wireside) is pretty difficult. So I decided to pull Z44 unit completely out from its place: Pull out passenger side foot panels (plastic panels). That helps little bit. Then you can detect white clips at the Z44 rear end. Bend clips little bit > pull Z44 rear end downward (its stiff), and then drag it strongly backwards. With using reasonable power, it really finally comes out and you have Z44 unit on your hand. Here is few extra pics, where you can see how it works (Z44 unit, picture)

With those pictures you probably could do Fuse 57 wiring without removing Z44? But before that you need to pick correct fuse pin from dealer. If you do that, please post those pins OEM part numbers here. And also you need new pin for X434*1B. Then maybe you can plug it straight from Z44 upper side to F57 wire slot. Room is very tight.... After that, access to "X434*1B" is easy case. Side cover is very tight!

All functions is working perfectly after coding. Instrument cluster messages and automatic turn on functions as well

Hello Everyone, Newbie here.

I'm desperately interested in retrofitting a heated steering wheel to my G30 530d, however, all the above is not very clear unless you're a competent wizard!

I would be OK buying all the required parts (wheel, switch cluster, anything else required) But I would be much happier handing it over to a company/professional person to carry the conversion out. Does anyone know who could do this?
Any help would be much appreciated and gratefully received!
Cheers

I think any BMW-specified "third-party" workshop can do this retrofit. Its really easy job. Make enquiry from local BMW-forum and somebody probably point you few best proper professionals for this. There must be many many place (private and companies) for that kind of small BMW-projects. I think best alternative is some private pro-level enthusiast, who could do it with suitable price.

Stay far away from BMW-dealer because of your wallet!

JKK74 I’m working on installing the BMW ACE camera, and I need to get a wire into the back of Z44. It looks like your image links are broken. Can you send them to me or repost?

Thanks!

Hi, So did you have to run the power wire or was it all plug&play in your G01 ?

You done need to change SZL for steering wheel retrofit. If you use the the wheel that has the heating button on the front side, you just install the steering wheel and code it.

I went through this recently and can add a few comments:

The gray-red wire coming out of Z44 (mentioned by JKK74) and fuse F57 are only missing in cars that have NO heated steering wheel AND NO vibration actor in the steering wheel. In cars that have the vibration actor (DA /DA Plus / DA Pro), it's always installed. In this case, you don't need another steering column switch cluster either. Both the vibration actor and the heating elements get their power through this same red/gray wire, so if everything is there for one, it's ready for the other too.

The easiest way to be sure everything is there is to simply look if the Fuse F57 (10A) + red/gray wires are installed. This can be done using no tools by simply removing the cover under the glovebox. The pictures are from my LCI - same wire color as preLCI.

In my LCI, the coding parameters where slightly different from the one posted here. I compared the default values between FA 248 and FA without 248 and these are the final changes for heated steering wheel in my LCI:

BDC_BODY3:
CODDT_BYTE_00_LRE_LIN: nicht aktiv -> LHZ_RHE_mit_TASTER
CTRL_HOD_CODG_STWH_LIN: nicht verbaut -> verbaut
LHZ_CCM_IKF: nicht aktiv -> aktiv
LIN_VARIANTE_LRE: lre_tlc -> lre_tlc_lhz_taster
LRE_LHZ_VERBAUT: nicht aktiv -> aktiv

HU_MGU:
SVS_CONTROL_LENKRADHEIZUNG: nicht_aktiv -> aktiv
AKT_AUTO_LENKRADHEIZUNG: nicht aktiv -> aktiv
