video all day. just played with it for photo when i got home. rented one mark3 and one mark2 for my wedding today. i think i'm going to buy one as soon as i can, and then rent a mark2 along with it. my rental place is charging me TWICE what I've been getting a mark2 for. not happy about that. or, i could buy a demo'd/used mark2 and a new mark3 and then just rent lenses.

1. the Depth of Field Preview button cannot be assigned to Spot Meter on hold. I use this a lot on my D3 when in Manual mode - I can easily spot meter an area of the scene really quickly and then adjust exposure quickly before taking the shot. With this option, I can keep the Metering mode always in regular "evaluative" mode as the Canon calls it.

2. I can't adjust WB kelvin on the fly without turning on the screen and going through menus, unless I'm in Video or LV mode. On the D3, I can just hold the WB button and spin the top dial to adjust. on the Canon, it just changes the AF mode. And on that note, what the F is ai-servo and ai-focus and one shot?!

3. I have to change hand positions just to turn the camera on/off. [applies to photo and video]

4. The top WB and AF-drive buttons should be swapped.

that's all for now. i'll use the camera for stills tomorrow to really test it out, these above points are from messing with it when I got home tonight. i used it all day today for video. really pleased with it so far. the high clean iso is so nice. i was pissed about the magnify button being on the left side until I figured out how to set it to the center SET button - there's no reason you should have to remove your hand from the manual focus wheel just to zoom in during video. the layout of the buttons took some getting used to - i kept hitting the new magnify button, and the info button is in an awkward spot now. and the only way to turn off the screen during video is to power down or switch to photo mode on the start/stop switch. lame.
1. you're one of very few people who still used the DOF review button (i do seldomly, but very seldom) but yes, it would be nice to have that control in the review mode, that's pretty much why I don't use the mode anymore.

2. quick Kelvin adjust would be a nice touch.

3. most people seem happy with the new location of the On/Off button location. I don't see why it's such a big issue for anyone really. I just turn my camera on when it comes out of the bag, and off when it goes back in, so the location really isn't a concern.

4. That's just being used to a Nikon and trying to use a Canon. I'm sure when most Canon people pick up a nikon they say the exact opposite.

to answer questions about One shot and AI-servo. One shot is pretty much the focus to use when shooting stills. It's a one time focus and lets you recompose the shot while maintaining your original focus point.

AI-focus is for tracking moving objects. Likely Dcstep's favorite function on his 7D when shooting wildlife.

I'm glad you're happy with it for video, should make a nice replacement for you having to rent a 5DmkII all the time.

how is your rental place justifying the price increase?

and what is ai-servo?
i don't use DOF preview, lol, i use that button to spot meter.

i guess #4 isn't too bad, just seems a stretch to reach for the WB button, when it seems more used than the AF-mode button.

they said it's in too much demand right now to give me the same kind of discount as they give me on the mark2's. so basically, i'll be renting one of each (instead of two mark2's) until i purchase.

It's part of their autofocus system that allows you to "track" objects in movement.

alright, this was colored and saved with Apple ProRes 422HQ 1080p. Compressed to h.264 and 50Mbps 1080p and then uploaded to Youtube where they did whatever to it.
if you were in that room and also looking at my screen, (lcd brightness aside) you can definitely tell it was sucking up a LOT of light that wasn't there to the human eye. it was pretty dark, save for the LED up-lighting on the columns/walls. my settings on the dance floor were 1/50th, f/1.4 and ISO 2500.

the very first shot is ISO 25,600. not clean, but is the same as the old 6400. That's two stops. The rest of the shots are ISO 2500 - really clean! I even bumped the shadows up as I usually do. These were shot with the flat Cinestyle profile. The slider shot was at f/2 on the 135. the rest of the shots were f/1.4 and the 35mm.

Youtube compression added some blockiness, but this is not noise from the original. any original noise was very fine, not block-like. except for the 25,600 shot at the top, it had some slight horizontal banding with the larger noise, but not blocky like the compression from youtube.

Sorry my bad, ai-focus is sort of a timed focus where it will let the person move about for a second before it stops focusing (I don't really understand why you'd want that.). And ai-servo, which I originally mentioned, will follow an object as long as you're holding the shutter release half or fully down.

I used the wrong word in my previous post

ISO 10,000. processed in LR4.1 - can't remember settings. no Luminance NR. standard 25 setting in Color NR.
check out the detail retained where his shirt meets the bib. pretty amazing.

i know there are sample images out there, but this is real world-ish. light is from a far away tungsten and a TV screen. 1/200th and f/1.4

Cool thanks...

too bad I just spent my money on another toy... I'll be saving up for the camera though I think. My MKII is showing it's age. It's a bit cranky.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Recall?

man, after today's crappy announcement and the 1D X delays, Canon is in for some really bad PR if this turns out to be true.

The ISO processing on the 5mk3 is incredible. I do a lot of shooting with natural lighting and could really use the extra iso.

agreed, the company is too big and well known for a little glitch to really do much damage.

ford and toyota have done just fine after their massive glitches. People barely remember those now.
