$3500 Deposit?
A local dealer is asking for a $3500 "refundable" deposit on a new 5-Series.
Does that seem high to anyone? What sized deposits have you been putting down for custom orders? |

I was deciding between a G30 and an F80, ended up ordering an Individual Color F80 (M3) through my dealer. They originally wanted a $5K deposit for the F80 because it was a unique color, but eventually we agreed upon a $3K deposit.
They said they only take that high of deposit on M cars, especially ones with Individual colors/interiors. If I had ordered a G30, they would have taken a $1K deposit, or even none depending on the options selected. |

I did a $1000 refundable deposit to hold my place/allocation for a G30 at a US dealer (about a year in advance).

+1, Thats what I have always done.
Unless you are ordering some sort of a freak config that they can not sell if you change your mind, deposit has not been necessary for me in the past.

honestly that sounds very reasonable because it's refundable. it means that if you want to pay a smaller downpayment, you can take some of it back.
i recently placed an order for a 2018 540 xdrive ($72,000 MSRP), the dealer only asked for $1000 but it's non refundable. i also happened to pick all the safe options. even if i ended up not taking the car, it won't sit on the lot for long. other dealers wanted a 5% nonrefundable deposit, which would have worked out to over $3,500. my 540 xdrive will be alpine white w/black leather, driver assist, luxury seating, parking assist, premium, M sport breaks, apple carplay, harman, wireless charging. on the flip side, before getting the 540, i was actually trying to buy a 2018 Audi S5 sportback. every dealer i spoke with wanted a $5,000 non-refundable deposit, which it thought was ridiculous. on top of that, the dealers wanted $1500 worth of bulls**t dealer fees on top of the bank fee. |
