540I Mperformance exhaust .. underwhelming

Hey Guys,

I have received my custom ordered 2018 Bluestone Metallic 540I finally.. it came in about 10 days ago.. I plan to do a big thread shortly.. time has not been on my side to do it the way I want ... but will be coming soon.

I made this thread to get others opinions on the Mperformance Exhaust.

I added this selection to my build as the stock exhaust is way too quiet and I prefer the larger tips of the MPE as well.

Before I get started and I will cover in my personal review and thread I DO LOVE THIS CAR.. IT IS AMAZING AND I AM MORE THAN THRILLED WITH IT with one small complaint... the sound

First time I heard my cars exhaust was at the dealer in the showroom as my Sales rep set in the seat cranked it up and pulled it out of the showroom floor. I stood in anticipation of it starting to hear the sound of the MPE upon starting I expected it to be a little bit deeper/ louder than it was especially in the showroom as most cars / motorcycles usually sound deeper in a closed in area.

After starting the car up again once I got home I got out to have a listen.. even had the wife drive the car to hear it take off. Not bad, just not good as in you would be hard pressed to think I spent extra money on the exhaust system. Also there is a very noticeable rattle upon start up I believe coming from the heat shield.. it goes away after about 30 seconds.. but is rather embarrassing as it sounds metallic and cheap.. Is there a fix to this or is this pretty normal?

didn't have that rattle on past cars of mine.

I primarily keep the car in Sport Plus, perhaps after I log some more miles on it break in will give a little deeper tone.

In short Its not my M but I was expecting a little more grunt... Honestly I find it very underwhelming and a tad unfulfilling... Granted I wanted smoother and more refined this round for my car choice I just thought adding the MPE would step it up another notch.

I added this to the build so no stock exhaust to change out to so I will be keeping this exhaust for the next 3 years.. however I am considering going ahead and placing my order tomorrow for the Stage 1 Dinan Tune.. hoping this will give it not only a little extra power but just a little extra sound as well.

For those of you with just MPE.. thoughts

and for those of you with MPPSK have you heard a 540 with just MPE.. any noticeable difference in sound ?

last... I have pretty much zero drone in comfort or sport... I have yet to put the car in Eco and don't foresee it being pressed anytime soon.

Look forward to hearing from those of you that have this exhaust.

I had MPE for a year already.
It gets deeper after a couple months.

The rattle, it is not heat shield. It is the exhaust tip.
I had BMW to warranty my first set and the replacement made rattling noise again already.

I'll make a short video tomorrow to show you what I meant by it.

I am trying to find a fix for it too. Maybe some JB Weld or Silicon.

Good to hear it gets a little deeper with break in

Bummer to hear its the tip and you haven't found a fix within a year thus far.

I will have my dealer have a look as well... b/c in short its annoying that I spent this extra money for this exhaust and it rattles upon start up.

I will do a short video clip of mine as well to post up and we can see if we have the same issue

car is dirty b/c the storm in FL right now.. but here is a pic of the exhaust tip

The only thing i did not like about my car was sound, i mean lack of it.

Bone stock it was too quite for me. MPPSK fixed it. It is not as loud as my 335i with downpipes etc but i am very satisfied with it.

Part numbers for the MPE and the exhaust that comes with the kit are different but i believe it's the exact same exhaust.
Start up may sound different due to the tune and the burbles maybe. Probably not but just a guess.

It does get a litlle louder and deeper over time.

I've had my mppsk car now for almost 6 weeks and about 800 mixed drive miles. The exhaust was deeper toned initially compared to a standard exhaust but not as aggressive as i had expected. Some burbles on throttle lift and downshifts...however, after 500 miles, i think things loosen up and sound improves. Gets louder, a bit more "growl", and now that I'm pushing the car a bit more as i near the 1200mi break-in, above 3500-4k rpm, definitely sounds better. Had the wife take a spin so i could hear it better....lots of pops, bangs, and burbles now. Do a 2nd gear hard accel to 4500rpm and quick let off the throttle....you will hear what i think you want to hear.

I had my 540i x delivered with the MPPSK installed and I am very satisfied.
After listening to the original sewing machine this is a real upgrade.

My car just passed the 2000km (1200miles?) mark and I don't think I hear any difference.
Of course my testosterone wants it to be louder, but there is no limit for that..

The sound it makes with this exhaust i brilliant. So clean, refined.. Good for every day

Open the sunroof and accelerate in a tunnel, that sounds amazing.

I heard that if you only get the MPE then you have to change the exhaust again if you want to upgrade to MPPSK. Or maybe you just have to pay for the exhaust again?

Computer.

I have also scheduled an appointment for my car this Tuesday.

after starting the car and getting the worst rattle from the left exhaust tip I simply placed my hand on it ( before It gets warmed up naturally ) and it stopped just as you said all falls on this exhaust tip..

they said they would try and replace if they could find a way to adjust

I will let them start there as there are plenty of videos on youtube where the MPE isn't rattling on a 540.. if that doesn't do the trick I am going to ask them to replace as mine is pretty bad

My MPE /MPPSK has 0 rattle, it's a flawless silky smooth quality sound only.
They should fix it

UPDATE

Took my Car in On Tuesday. They listened and agreed it sounded bad and needed new parts.

New update call about 20 minutes ago from Service Manager. Technician has ordered new exhaust and new tips.. will be in Friday and Installed.

So they should be delivering my car back to me on Saturday

I'm good with this as I just want my car to sound good and agree .. should have no rattling.. Especially when paying for an upgraded exhaust system

Unfortunately I'm stuck in a basic model X3 , when I had to have my car picked up to do some software update b/c my SOS button wasn't working I got a 2018 X5 Loaner Mpsort... much nicer.. But hey.. nothing to really complain about the X3 will get me around and things could always be much worse.

Just happy to know they are really putting some attention to detail on the fix for my exhaust and not just giving me a run around "quick fix"

It will come back.
I am on the second set if tips and gave up.
I am going to fix it myself.

Yea. I was considering that.

If so I'll have them replace again.. I'm not good at taking care of issues like this myself.

They are bringing my car to me today at 4. Will be nice to have it sound right for awhile though and if it returns I may escalate the issue at that point.

Fingers crossed as some have had zero issues with their mpe.

My fit and finish is flawless on mine...no rattle whatsoever...not so much as a single metallic clink even on startup. Hopefully your dealer fixes it correctly...more likely an installation issue than a part issue

It is part issue 100%.
Some comes early, some comes later.
Same tip design on the F15/F16 X5/X6 MPE.
Some doesn't have problem for years, some have problem after a few months.

Not the same tip or tip design as F15/F16 MPE...but regardless, the issue likely lies with a dealer (who may or may not have experience with fitting MPPSK to cars) removing factory parts placed with high standards and quality controls (such as precise measurement of torque applied to a bolt so results are reproducible) and replacing them using a "how to..." manual. How has your MPPSK/MPE been for you? Pleased with the sound?

Let's see if I can explain this in words.

Both F15/F16 MPE tips and G30 MPE tips design are the same.
The tip consist of bend pipe, inner square tip, and outer chrome tip shell.
The outer chrome tip shell is slip onto the inner square tip, then both partially welded at the end to the pipe.
So, there is a gap between the inner square tip and the outside shell.
When new, before getting heat cycle from the exhausts heat, the tolerance is tight and no rattle. But, after a few heat cycle where metal expand and contract, the tolerance increased. Seems like the inner and the outer material are different.
After sometime, it gets worst When you tap the chrome part of the tip, it will vibrate and hit against the inner part. That's when the rattle happen.

I will ask my tech to do a full weld at the end and see if that will help.

Anyway, to answer your question on how I like the MPE, I like it very much.

Here is a quick video of it. The sound in the video came out a little different than the actual. Also, it sounds better with a load. Somehow it doesn't sound as nice with the car just sitting and revving.

I'm loving it...i really feel that the MPPSK takes a great luxury car and instills a palpable amount of that old BMW sport that has been missing lately. Sound of exhaust is not overdone between idle and 3500-4k rpm (deeper tone, more volume than stock with subtle burbles and pops) but above 4k rpm, it really comes alive. 5k rpm throttle lifts gives a handful of loud "machine gun shots" which turn some heads and full throttle upshifts give a great shove and blat from the exhaust. Windows down definitely allows you to hear exhaust more (perhaps too much sound-deadening in the g30). Ive done some casual quiet backroad launch control starts and rolling accelerations....timed 0-60mph at 4.2 sec average, best was 4.1, but most were 4.2 and 4.3. Passing power is better than stock...easy to blow well past the speedlimit (such as passing car doing 50mph in a 55mph zone, drop to 3rd gear and floor it...easy to get to 85 or 90mph in a few seconds). I would highly recommend the MPPSK...if you want old BMW passion in addition to mini-7-series lux/comfort, you can't go wrong. 540i is a great car....540i with MPPSK is a great BMW.

This is my take on the MPPSK.

The more miles I have done the better it gets, in terms of sound.
