I've just gotten really into F1 this year and I have a question: Is Hamilton a whiny child? It seems like he is one of the better drivers but only when he is out in front.

Hamilton is a very consistent driver and he drives a dominant car. When he gets out in front and can control the race, he does well. He's a bit less effective when he's back in the pack.

That's mostly down to the design of the Merc. Last year especially it was impossible for a Merc to come close to any car.

For some reason, they rely more on down force than other cars, hence the struggle to overtake.

Is that question based on personal observations you've made since getting into F1 this year or are you simply echoing the general sentiment of Hamilton haters that you've read online?

Which driver isn't a "whiny child" when shit happens?

95% of HAM's radio communications with the team is complaining, criticizing, scolding, and condescending. When things don't go his way (yet he makes the podium), he might stand there with his head down, or pull his hat down. He does the same in the post-race interview room. Name one other driver who does this.

He's a top talent, but he's also the most fortunate driver in the history of the sport. He went from one top team (where he won a WC) to another top team (where he's won 3) at just the right time. He should be generally very happy, as Michael Shumacher was.

95% of his radio communications that are featured on F1's world feed. We only hear a small subset of actual radio communications. Other drivers have also complained that F1 Broadcasting focuses on negative radio communications:

Also, from a few years back: "The problem with the radio is that my message is not meant for the masses, it’s meant for the team,” said Jenson Button. “In a way it’s a pity that TV companies just choose the messages they want, because they can come across in the wrong way.”

I've always wondered how they choose the messages that are broadcast. Even if HAM complains 95% of the time, that's better than Grosjean who seems to complain 100% of the time (at least the ones we get to hear).

Now we will hear Grosjean's radio blaming Ericsson instead.

I think the FOM pick and choose the radio that gives the most "personality" and "drama". Thus all the whining, struggle, blaming, blue flags, etc etc. But I cannot blame liberty media though, even previously with Bernie's CVC, FOM seems to pick the most whiny-est radio transmission.

Although I hate Liberty media's CGI overlay of Heineken Star and F1 logo on screen. And also the Mario Kart style "beep" at the race start lights.

This is a red herring. They may focus on certain messages, but I rarely hear other drivers complain about their own team. And Hamilton's behavior on the podium and in interviews is not edited.

Just from watching the broadcasts. Other drivers seem ecstatic when they win e.g. Seb and Riccardo. I'm definitely not a hater more of a fan. Either way F1 has got my attention more than NASCAR ever did.
