No, I mean perpendicular.

The BMW site mentions this specifically as supported on the 2020 530e I ordered and I absolutely tried this when I test drove the MY2019 530i and it worked perfectly.

Maybe it was added with a software update I don't know and I will tell you if the BMW marketing is wrong once my MY2020 530e arrives. But I absolutely did test this out.

Is this not Perpendicular parking on a 530i?

They've obviously never accidentally spilt anything inserting or removing a drink from a cup holder.

To make it worse...people don't just drink water. If the drink has sugar in it...when it evaporates...it will leave a sticky residue. So even if the socket has been waterproofed...it hasn't been "sugar-proofed".
Yes, my F10 has the 12v ciggy port right between the cupholders, but at least it is somewhat raised (on a bridge) and it comes with a cover/plug. In this G30, the USB port in the wireless tray is right at the bottom (sink drain) without a plug.

I stand corrected. I never tried it or realized it did perpendicular. Nevertheless, doubt I'd ever use it. But thanks for the correction. In 2020 G30 I believe you'll still have to hold the PA button during parking process unlike the newer G series cars.

Update - I tried the perpendicular park assist. In my sitch it was more comedy than useful. First, it hardly ever identifies spaces unless those spaces are sandwiched between two cars. What if I don't want to park between two cars but prefer an open spot? Seems not happening. On the rare occasion it does identify an open spot, when I activate park assist it then backs up until it finds a car to park next to (or exits claiming it can't park for me).

Then I tired parking between two cars. It doesn't identify the spot markings, only the cars next to it. So, it parks you between the cars, even if that means you are not even close to centered in the spot. I also asked a friend with a G05 X5 and he says his acts the same so he never uses it for anything other than parallel park assist. BMW/Continental/Bosch/Valeo have some AI work to do to get this right.

Tested 2 types of parking today at the mall's car park. Parallel park and reverse perpendicular parking. I don't see the option for forward perpendicular parking.

I believe it's reverse in only. But it kinda sucks given it really only works to jam you in between cars. If you prefer to park in a less congested area this feature seems to not work well. So I just keep parking it myself. The surround cameras were worth the option price.

On the 2019 530i I test drove and did this on it worked perfectly with only 1 car to the side of us, but it was reverse in. I didn't try forward in and I didn't try it enough to see what the limits were. Just rolled up to a spot and did it. The BMW CA was kind enough to note to us that the system operates purely off of other cars and can't understand parking lines so we'd need to be mindful of those. So it might get you into a spot, but that may not look well or be setup the way a person would do it.

I'll let you know what the story is with the 2020 when I get mine in a month or so depending on how long the post-production takes. But, I was happy that the 2019 had you hold the button down. I felt it would make me feel more relaxed compared to what I've seen on the updated system. On that you not only don't need to hold the button, but it also parks faster. Which makes intervening a bit trickier.

But thankfully it isn't as bad as when we tried the Prius Prime. That one almost crashed and was a pretty horrible experience overall.

My 2017 does reverse perpendicular parking, are we saying that the 2020 with ID7 (lite) may not be able to do what has been in these cars from launch?

I enjoy the iDrive 7, but given it takes more time getting used to than the 6. When home screen is customized to your needs, it works well. I hate that it doesn't have remote sw upgrade though, feels cheap. My maps doesn't even update remote! What use is a nav system w/o updated maps??? Waze is still king...

That seems odd as wasn't remote updating maps a supported feature of iDrive 6 on the G30? I don't yet have my MY2020 530e (it is in production). I hope, at least, the maps support automatic updates.

Yes remote map update support is standard on ID6.

Are the remote map updates still just for one selected region? Tks.

I believe the updates are only for the North American region.

That makes sense...

I couldn't see them dropping this feature when Mercedes-Benz added it to their vehicles solely to compete against BMW in the US.

Unless it changed with the latest iDrive version (7)...OTA (over the air) map updates are regional (within) the USA. The updates don't include the entire country/continent...they only update for various regions within the country/continent.

If you go to page that shows what map version you have, you should see the original nav map's date...then if you've received any OTA regional map updates...it usually reveals what states are included in your region.

You can see an example below...the original North America nav maps were for 2015...but the 2018 OTA (regional) update was only for the US northeast:

In the example below...again, the original NA nav maps are for 2015...but the 2016 OTA regional update was for Texas/USA:

In the example below, the original maps are the 2017 NA version, but the 2019 OTA maps are for the southwest US region for Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, & Utah:

In this 4th example...the 2015 NA maps have been updated with 2016 OTA maps for the US southeast states:

In this 5th example...the 2015 NA maps have been updated with 2016 OTA regional maps for California, Hawaii, and Nevada:

And in this last example...you can see the original 2015 NA maps and the 2016 OTA regional maps that have me totally confused as to the region because the abrieviations don't make sense to me....the two digit postal code "AL" is normally Alabama...but how could Canada & Alabama be in the same region? So it's either Canada & Alaska (AK), Canada & Alberta (AB), or Canada & Alabama (AL)?
