Steering wheel shaking at high speeds (19" csl's recently installed)
My steering wheel is shaking at 60mph and above. I have 19" csl's all the way around and I'm not sure why its doing this at high speeds. Do all z4 coupes do this in the beginning stages? I only have 3,000 miles on the car!

Get your wheels balanced, again. I had the same issue, I had my wheels rebalanced and its better, although not perfect. The guy at the tire shop blames the tires I got from a UK discount store. What tires do you have on?

true but you'd feel that before high speeds...

Not necessarly. I had a set of TE37s on my last coupe that where said to be hubcentric, turns out Rays was a few mm off on the measurements. Caused the car to vibrate over 50-60mph but was fine down low (again off slightly). Could be the case here. If it was off 10-15mm you are correct he would likely feel the vibration much earlier.

Of course, I'd make sure these were not the issue before going the next level like alignments, etc.: 1) Are wheels properly balanced? Any balance weights maybe fallen off? 2) Are all wheel bolts properly torqued (star fashion) to specs, and re-torqued ~100-150 miles after wheels were installed? 3) Are your wheels hubcentric to the vehicle? Many BMW replica wheels come hubcentric to the 5er / 7er, so rings need to be used on Z4s. |

I had a similar issue with my 325i with 19" wheels. Their ended up being 2 problems. The wheels were all balanced ok. However, the tech at the tire place showed me how the wheels themselves weren't perfectly round. They weren't tremendously bad, but enough.
Also, the tech cleaned off the inside of the wheels and the outside of the hubs - both surfaces where they meet. That made a distinct difference. After I had the wheels straightened, the vibration & shimmy went away completely. I'm assuming that your wheels are new, but have them checked and cleaned anyways. The previous comments about the hub centric rims vs centering rings should also be looked at. |

I had them mounted and balanced somewhere and then put them on myself. Maybe I torqued them too tightly? I'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow, so hopefully they can figure out whats going on. Can this mess up the car at all?

It's free...but they told me it was JUST THE TIRES. I have Nitto Envo's and they are saying its just the tires and its normal. Is there any truth to this? They said keep driving it and it WOULD NOT hurt my car.

I suggest you find a good tire and wheel place and check out the tires make sure they are not defective and the wheels. Wheels America is a good place dont know if there is one near you. Had a vibration on a 2000 Audi S4 that never went away no matter what I did, one of the wheels was very slightly out of round or wobbling, it was virtually unnoticeable but they rebuilt the wheel and the car was perfectly smooth afterwards. They said you'd be surprised how many wheels are imperfect from the factory. It makes balancing an impossible task.

I just put on a set of 19" ZCP wheels on my car with michelin pilot sports. I set the torque wrench for the wheel bolts at 85 ft/lbs in a star pattern. I bought em used with about 5000 miles and they were balanced by the previous owner.
I haven't had any problems but I've only had them on for a couple days. Took it up to 110mph without a problem. I've never heard of re-torqueing the bolts at 100-150 miles but I guess that's not a bad idea.

I recently put a set of Nitto Invos on my stock 18" wheels (style 224) and have had no problems with vibration at any speed. They are quieter and smoother riding than the original Contis that came with the car. I wouldn't "buy" what they are saying about it being "just the tires" and it's normal. It could be a tire problem causing it (bad tire), but it's certainly not normal.

Are the CSL's replicas? If so are the Hub Centric? If not there might be a small gap causing shaking or thumping at 60 - 80 mphs. You probably need hub spacers.

I've got to throw my two cents in wheel torque. The best way to have the brakes vibrate when you apply them is to have improperly torqued wheels. I NEVER let the tire shop or dealer torque the wheels, I always take the car home and torque them by hand (no torque wrench) to +-90 lbs. You can pick up a torque wrench for less than $100 and it is the best money spent.
