G30 M550i: Help Identifying Creaking/Groaning
I've been driving this vehicle for about two weeks now, and becoming more aware of an annoying and persistent creaking/groaning/squeaking come from the back of the vehicle - more noticeable at slower speeds over standard dips and bumps in the road.
I put an audio file on Google Drive here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y8m...ew?usp=sharing. You can get a really good idea of what this sounds like at around 00:37 and 1:10 and hear it peppered throughout. This is driving into my neighborhood from a stop light, going no faster than 45mph/72kph but probably averaging 30mph/48kph. The sounds persist whether side/rear sun shades are up or not, and in both sport and comfort mode. I have stock RFTs at 38/42psi and wondering if this is a factor (although I would doubt the car would be spec'd at this and have the noise as standard). Can anyone help pinpoint what this could be from? I'm bringing this to service next week, but want to have an idea before they potentially dismiss it. This is in addition to the groaning and squeaking brakes stopping from a low speed, which seems to be a theme here in some other threads! Last edited by frzntax; 10-04-2020 at 08:00 PM.. Couple of possibilities
Door seals. Had this on my e39 and f10 and applied gummifledge to the seals to remedy. Proactively applies to the g30 but not heard One thing to try, does the noise go away if you lower the windows - just a couple of millimetres is all that's required. If the noise goes away that suggests it is that. It's just the seals moving against the paintwork as t body and doors move ever so slightly. A bump in the road is enough to make the body change shape imperceptibly. Other possibility which I have is the boot/trunk. Again noticeable when the body twists. I have this but only seen when my car turns to manoeuvre up a ramp. I don't hear it on roads and there fire I have not done anything about that. |

Thank you for these tips. Rolling down the windows helps, but doesn't completely solve the issue. Today, the tech told me there is sometimes a wax buildup along the inside of the door that can cause some of the sounds. Of course, in driving the car over a brick road and as many dips as I could find with him in the vehicle, the car was quiet. It seems to happen more when the car has been sitting, so it will sit at the shop overnight and he'll reassess in the morning. He did apply some liquid along the inner door and seals, so hopefully it's as simple as that. But when he heard the audio his reaction was "whoa." I'll update this thread tomorrow when I pick it up.
And yes, his claim was with the M performance brakes, the (brake) sounds are pretty standard and recommended a good hard breaking from higher speeds - which I've read here on this forum also. Last edited by frzntax; 10-07-2020 at 04:38 PM.. |

I think it's the rubber passing over the metal , it might stick momentarily and then move causing the noise.
It's presumably being pushed against the metal under some pressure and this causes the sticking. By lowereing the windows this removes that pressure so the rubber slides over the metal more easily and hence no noise Well that's my take on it anyway! |

Well, it's good the car sat overnight because he was able to identify the issue right away in the morning. It's definitely temperature dependent, and the sunroof assembly is the cause. He found the glass was misaligned, adjusted to spec, but the noise was still there. Removed and installed the headliner, sunroof cassette, cleaned all mounting points and re-installed. After his second test drive, the noise was no longer present (but now I suspect due to the roof having heated up with the drives). In taking the car home some hours later, it was indeed subdued - maybe like 80% better. Now, after driving the car tonight after it had been sitting for an extended time, the noise is back.. maybe even worse. It makes sense that I hear it at night more, when the sun isn't beating on it to allow for the expansion of components to quiet the noise. Opening the sunroof a crack alleviates the sounds. I've seen some posts on here regarding this, I think, so I'll take a look - but not sure what the next steps are if I can't get this resolved. It'd definitely be an annoying thing to live with...

That's the problem with these cars in that they are so quiet that the smallest noise becomes an issue.
Must be an issue for all electric cars as well! Also difficulty pinpointing where a noise comes from as well. |

I have a creaking coming from my sunroof seals. Opening the sunroof of course prevents it from happening. If I push slightly up on the glass from the inside (or down from the outside) I can hear the sound.
Usually it isn't noticeable unless going over bumps which causes some flex in the chassis and the seals to rub. Might have the dealer replace them if I can. Curious if anyone thinks just applying some product to the seals could help. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/einszett-9148...+pflege&dpPl=1 |

Yeah, it's definitely back at about the same intensity. Audio here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1C-j...ew?usp=sharing. If it was just a minor noise here or there, it would be tolerable. But in this case.. I'll contact the dealer and see what the next steps are, maybe suggest sunroof seal replacement?

If the seals are rubber then yes I think gummifledge had a good chance of working. It's designed for rubber and this works for the door seals (especially f10 and e39)
Just make sure you don't get any wax on them from any cleaning regime you have |

I just got my car back. They ordered and replaced the sunroof seal, surrounding seal, and sunroof glass cover. As of this evening, the noises are gone! Having it sit overnight and driving tomorrow will be the true test.
